Prince Rupert’s Drop

Post by Tycer »

Prince Rupert’s drops are made by dripping molten glass into water.
What happens when you shoot at one?

I had never heard of a Prince Rupert's Drop, nor would I have believed such a small amount of glass could be so tough. I certainly learned something today! Thanks for the links, Tycer. :D

My internet sucks right now so I can't look at the links, but I'd swear I posted something about those from that "smartereveryday" guy a year or so ago. His shows are great. He filmed them 'detonating' at high speed.

Yes, if the tail is broken all the stresses are released in a spectacular mechanical explosion of glass shards.

That dude who makes the Smarter Every Day videos is great - some cool topics (I like the one where he drops cats and films it in slow motion to show how they right themselves and land on their feet, and the one where he makes a clear acrylic potato-gun and films it in slow motion at night showing the ignition patterns and shock waves that happen internally in the combustion chamber).
