Made a drum sander
Thought we`d try our hand at making one of these and by golly it works pretty good.

Re: Made a drum sander
Nice Lenn. Looking forward to the Youtube. Now if you could show us all how to make an accurate thickness planer for $25 ...
Re: Made a drum sander
Thanks Bill, yea now don`t push my luck
I`ve had a small planer but i tear the gears out of the cheap things , this will work for small projects as all my wood is rough lumber.

Re: Made a drum sander
Awesome Lenn! I see you can adjust the angle of the feed ramp to account for changes in board thickness. That's cool.
Re: Made a drum sander
Thanks Bill, in the pictures i had a sliding pipe for the adjuster but ya couldn`t move it in small enough measurements so i replaced it with a threaded rod this morn.

This guy and his ingenuity never fails to amaze me.
How to you make the sanding drums....glue on the sandpaper? ----6

Re: Made a drum sander
Thanks Six, so far the sand paper is stapled along the edges and a wire tie on each end we`ll see how that works.
The drum was turned round on the lathe then drilled a 58th hole through it and glued a rode in it, then i mounted it on the sander frame and trued up the drum with a wood turning tool.
I screwed a board cross ways behind the drum then clamped the cutter in between two pieces of wood so i could slide it along that board and get a straight even cut to true it up.
The board i sanded in the vid was a little green which is a no no as it will plug up the paper.
For small projects it should work good, i don`t need it as a thickness planner just to smooth up rough lumber.

Re: Made a drum sander
That's a pretty ingenious setup! Looks like it ought to work very well!
Is that a motor rated speed controller? If not, it might not last very long before it melts down. They get pretty hot when operating motor loads.

Re: Made a drum sander
As long as you have electricity Pitchy, it seems you can make almost anything. You could probably fit a steam engine to run that if the world goes insane.

Re: Made a drum sander
I don't think I know anything about building stuff that Pitchy don't already know but I'll give it a shot......your sandpaper and how it clogs up........on my belt sander I use an old shoe with a rubber sole....usually cheap sneaker type that mom wears out in a month.....not my Redwings that last five years..........makes the sandpaper look and work like new.....just turn on the sander and hold the sole up to it.----6
Re: Made a drum sander

Good idea buddy. I'm telling ya, you're one in a million, Pitchy!
It's true what you've said, "The gears never stop turnin."
