Good hunt today

Post by Dave »

Today I was in the house and looked out the window at the back flower beds. Low and behold, there was a varmint! I have battled the chipmunks for years and had shot them so hard at one point they had relocated. This year they are back and have been reeking havoc on my beloved's flowers.
I got the Marlin 39A and dropped five rounds of CB shorts in the mag. I picked up a dove stool and eased to the back door.
Now if you have ever hunted munks you know how fast and smart they are. Anything will spook them. I eased the door open just enough to extend my gun barrel and the wait began.
After about 10 minutes my patience was rewarded when a couple robins landed in the yard and started looking for bugs. I knew the munks would take that as a good sign and sure enough my quarry appeared.
Munks are small and at 20 yards are a tough shot for my over 40 eyes with iron and I passed up a couple iffy shots and was thinking I had blown my chances when the striped rascal stepped clear.
I put my front sight on him and it covered him completely. I trusted my sights, focused on the front one and pressed the trigger. I heard the "whap" sound that makes me happy.
I waited a few minutes to let him bleed out before I walked to where I thought he was. I had marked his location with a pansy. When I got closer I could see him right there. Never took a step.
It's a long time until hunting season, so you just have to do what you can. I thought about hanging him on the fence as a warning to his brethren, but just left him laying.

Good going. They sure can be pesky critters. One somer I shot 13 of the little pests in myback yard. I mostly used my co2 pellet pistol or pellet rifle. I haven't seen many lately.

Leave 'em lay. If you can stand the smell for a day or two, makes excellent fertilizer!
