Another reason I'm glad I escaped...

Post by mikld »

I couldn't find my small round sharpening stone so I ordered one from Smokey Mountain Knife Works. It's a round, medium grit, white stone, about 2" in diameter. It is attached to a sheet metal "button" (looks like a campaign button) and total its about 3/8" thick. But I noticed a sticker on the package; "Warning: Cancer and reproductive harm. www.P65 warning.CA.gov.". The state of CA has determined an inert, inorganic chunk of hard Arkansas stone, about 200 gr can cause cancer. I wonder if there are warning stickers on the sidewalks, light poles, mebbe message on a blimp flying overhead stating "Warning: Los Angeles air causes cancer". Just another reminder why I happily escaped CA 10 years ago....

Good to know you made it out alive!

Year or two or more back, SMKW posted an email or blog entry (can't find it now) to the effect that their products may have been exposed to nickel, lead, arsenic, plutonium or whatever CA is worried about this week.

Since they're a warehouse too, and all the products are together. Touching, passing by, bumped by forklifts, etc.

So, it was either stop selling to CA (at least some knives are still allowed there!) or they just posted the nanny state warning on everything.

So it's good to know if I buy a roll of paracord, a Buck knife, or a Cold Steel kukri, that those items may cause cancer.

Full disclosure, I'm a big fan of SMKW and been there enough times on Pigeon Forge vacations that I can almost now find my way around their store. (grin)

Did you know small amounts of saliva, swallowed over a long period of time can cause cancer! George Carlin quited that spoof awhile back. Todd/3leg

Believe it or not but that warning is the result of a proposition passed by the voters. Originally, it was supposed ed to be for things like asbestos. But once passed it required a governmental body to enforce it. Once they got in charge they just kept adding stuff to justify their existence. And so if goes.

Yep, I'm quite familiar with the voting in CA. I remember a state wide issue was on the ballot on how many square inches a chicken needed to lay eggs. The state is run by the large population centers, aka big cities, which we all know are 90% anti everything wholesome and sane. Also many times a vote is worthless as if the losing side has enough money the issue is sent to court and most times the decision/vote is reversed. Asbestos has been outlawed in CA for many, many years and I don't remember the ban on any ballot. Kinda like the buzzard bullet regulation. The condor population was going down, not by lead poisoning but from human encroachment and "natural" causes. I don't remember any scientific testing or necropsy findings published, just a bunch of city dwelling do-gooders pushed the lead bullet ban. There are still many good people in CA but the left has them out numbered. I retired on Dec. 1, '09, and was in my truck headed for OR on Dec. 2...

I got stories about other really weird, silly and down right stupid things that went on in CA government, but I fear this thread may get closed or moved to the "politics" area.

August 28, 2019 at 3:20PM MST we escaped across the border (legally) into Arizona. May the Old California that I grew up in, Rest In Peace.

Have been on vacation since, visiting family & friends in six states. We’ll eventually settle down in West Texas.

Escaping that political culture is really nice, and relaxing. Miss the good people, the Sierras, and our favorite restaurants.

Love the South West. Polite people, small towns, great food, lots of new history for me to learn, and everything my wife told me about TX is true (I’m new here, she is Houston born).

YES! Relaxing. I had a commute into down town LA for the last 20 years I worked. Didn't know how angry I was until 2 months after I left. I grew up in a Mexican neighborhood and most of my life in LA I was able to get good authentic Mexican food. But I discovered the farther North you go, the worse the Mexican food gets...

Hmmm. If Oregon worked the same way as CA (anything in the same zip code as a "toxic" material is also considered toxic), we would be in trouble. I buy groceries from a large store that also sells gasoline. Their pumps are less than 100 yards away and if OR worked like CA, all the food would have to be labeled "Warning..."

I make leather sheaths for my knives. I can no longer buy alcohol based leather dye in CA. It is banned. I must purchase water based dye that is inferior to the alcohol based dye. Yet I can walk into a hardware store and buy a gallon of denatured alcohol in CA. We have idiots making laws in our state capital. Good thing Reno, Nevada is only a 3 hour drive. wife goes to the casino and I go to the Tandy leather store to buy the good dye.

Lifelong Shasta County Californian here, the reddest county in the state. Here in the far north folks tend to be conservative gun owners, but still we are forced to live by laws passed by the whims of arrogant liberals.

Interesting you should mention the airports. I use to fly in and out of the San Jose Airport for business when I lived there up to 1980 and it was pretty much like every other airport. I flew in earlier this year to visit a friend in the central valley and I thought for a minute that we'd landed in Beijing! There were maybe a handful of people who weren't Asian or Indian in the entire airport!!
Every time I came back in the country on the left side the customs guys were part of the male anatomy and I entered in both LAX and SF , however when I enter on the right side (east) I’ve never had issue . And you’d think especially when I was returning from Dubai the guys in the Eastern airports would be s bit more anal .

We came really close to retiring in Fortuna, CA. Nice folks, nice cool area near the coast, small shooting range on the edge of town and the Eel River Trap and Gun Club skeet range down the hill from the house we almost bought. Right on the Eel river, small town but not so small as to be wanting any services, medical, etc. But although it was far north in the state, it is regulated by the same laws as the Los Angeles ghetto, about 700 miles away...

I sell Dutch oven lifters that my father and I invented, a few months ago I got a notice from our largest dealer that I needed to supply a list of materials used to manufacture them because of the cancer warnings.

I can understand people wanting to leave California but I wish they would stop coming to Utah we are slowly, getting faster every year, turning blue!

Never could understand why when people leave a place because they don’t like what it has become the immediately try to turn the place they moved to into the place they left.
