New Acquisitions

Post by 6pt-sika »

Bought a stainless Remington 700 SPS in 300 WSM as a donor rifle for building a 6.5 Sherman Short Magnum which is nothing more then the Remington SAUM Case with the body blown out a bit and the shoulder set back a bit . Supposedly it gets a skoosh more velocity than the 6.5 PRC . And yesterday I bought a rather nice Winchester Model 70 in stainless with the claw extractor chambered for the 243 WSSM , gun was bought initially to be rebarreled to 6.5-243 WSSM , but now I think I’ll use it during damage control season and see how I like the 6mm version . I had the exact same rifle in 25 WSSM a few years back and liked it quite a bit . The WSSM came with a set of dies and about 159 pieces of brass , after I bought the gun I ordered 150 pieces of brand new 243 WSSM for reforming later if I decide to build the 6.5 version

Should have a Shilen #3 stainless 1:8 6.5mm barrel by Tuesday . So all I need to do after the gun arrives is call Sherman order a set of dies as well as renting the reader and gauges . And get 100 pieces of brass . Already have most every 6.5mm bullet from 100-140 grains that’s deer usable known to man .

Just won 100 pieces of new unfired brass for the 6.5 Sherman Short Magnum for $170 less then what Sherman asks for it ! Heck this stuff was less then what once fired Remington SAUM brass would be . After I get the rifle built and loads worked up if it does to suit me I may go ahead and order 100 more pieces of brass from Sherman . I truly believe 200 pieces of brass should outlive the rifle and ME  Think I have 150 pieces of brass for my 26 Nosler and only ever used 25 pieces for about 180-190 shots in three years , at that rate I’ll never use all the brass and never burn the throat out being as I’m
almost 58 and figure my hunting may very well cease in 20 years . So I expect the same kinda thing for this 6.5 Sherman Short Magnum

Keep me (us) updated on your work with the 6.5 Sherman. My self I need to get off my rear and form some 6mm Rem AI brass, 223 AI and 17 AI hornet, haven’t needed to for 3 or 4 years.

The Sherman “should be” fairly easy they claim all is correct except a final blow out of the shoulder . I’ve got a 22-250AI and I truly HATE making brass for that thing . I also think if I go ahead and change the little Winchester to 6.5mm-243 WSSM all I should need to do is neck up , load it and roll on .

The end of the Athlon box of the scope I’ll use on both the WSSM and the Sherman .

The little 243 WSSM with the Athlon mounted and sitting in a Caldwell DeadShot field rest I recently got for use in a pasture field during damage control season .

This Caldwell thing seems to be a pretty good idea as we sit under shade trees in bag chairs during damage control work . I’ve been playing with it some while sitting on the couch watching TV . Seems pretty steady for long guns AND handguns .

I've been drooling for one of these for about 12 months and I finally gave in today . Hopefully I'll have in hand by the end of the week .it's NIB by the way so I'm pretty sure a RifleBasix trigger is going in at some point . I'll most likely give in a get a suppressor as well .

Tommorrow I'll start rattling some peoples chains to see if I can find a nice older Leupold Vari XIII 6.5-20x40AO scope that's matte finished for that 260 .

Shilen is only about 30 minutes from me. I have toured their factory on the annual open house. It was fun to see the barrels being made. As far as I can tell, and I am not an expert, their barrels give great results. Quite a few competition shooters use Shilen barrels.
The people who work there seem pretty happy with their jobs. I work for a company which has a retail business in Ennis, and I have spoken to some of the employees when they are off work. They all speak well of how they are treated and of how that Shilen does not sacrifice quality for profit. When the employees who are doing the real work are happy, the company is doing well.

Lets see my present 6.5-06 has a stainless Shilen barrel , my past 6.5-06 had a carbon steel Shilen barrel , my 26 Nosler has a stainless Shilen , the first 416 Rem Mag I owned had a carbon steel Shilen and I have a Shilen ordered for the upcoming 6.5 Sherman Short Magnum . Only so called custom barrel I own that isn't a Shilen is a Lilja on a Ruger #1 22-250AI . Used to be a bunch of them around here that were big into Hart barrels , probably very good barrels but given the choice I've always gone with Shilen . Now with all that being said I "have had" some guns other people rebarreled with carbon steel Douglas barrels and they shot very well . Around here I think Douglas was who you went to when you wanted a replacement barrel back in the 60's .

The 700 5R 260 showed up an hour or two ago . I was looking last night for my old Leupold Vari XIII 6.5-20x40mm scope last night and couldn't find it , must be mounted on something I don't remmember. So I picked up a Leupold 24BR scope I had in the safe . And mounted and bore sighted today .

Got stuff loaded for the Model 7 260 already and for the 243 WSSM so if I can get some stuff done for this 260 I just might hit the range Monday in the AM .

Incidently I got the paperwork etc in for a suppressor to use on this 260 , my AR-10 and two of the Grendels . Suppressor prices have gone down in the last 12 months .

Loaded up a dozen or so for the 700 5R 260 with what I used as the starting load of IMR 4064 or two grains below max pushing the Berger 130 VLD Hunting Match bullet . Various things in the last two weeks have my mind in other places as I forgot to scrub the barrel before heading to the range . Tried it at 25 made adjustments then 50 and adjustments then 100 and adjustments . Let the rifle sit while I fooled with other things I had shot it 7 or 8 times . After letting it cool I shot a single 3 shot group at 100 that measured .75” after deducting bullet diameter which I thought wasn’t bad for the first load and not what I’d call bear max which typically shoots a bit better for me . The factory trigger averaged 4 3/4 pounds with our trigger gauge and I ordered a Timeny that goes from
about 6 ounces to three pounds . I’ll load more this weekend or early next week .

I have an older Leupold M-8 24x BR scope on the gun . Couldn’t find my old Leupold Vari XIII 6.5-20AO with Target Dot to put on it . Must have that one on something so I need to go digging . Also ordered a rather inexpensive Athlon 6-24x50 to possible boy use on the rifle .

Well last week I got the Shilen stainless #3 6.5mm 1:8 barrel blank and today the donor 700 in 300 WSM arrived as well as 100 pieces of unfired 6.5mm Sherman Short Magnum . Got the brass on GB for about a $180 savings over new brass from Sherman , also way less then once fired SAUM brass !

And in a weak moment earlier this week I ordered a Hawk Hill Custom barrel blank . It’s stainkess 6mm that’s 1:7.5 , the beginnings for a 6mm-06 . Got a new PTG reamer for the 6mm-06 yesterday as well . Have Redding dies or order and am looking for a 700 in 06 for a donor .

Got two very new groups at 100 yards with my new Remington 700 5R in 260 REM . Put a new Timeny trigger in and have it set at 10-12 ounces . And the Leupold 24x BR scope doesn’t hurt things either .

Not bad at all for a new barrel. Once it is broken in, I would bet it will do even better.
