I can't imagine this airplane would do very well. Can you imagine the torque on that shared wing...?

I don't even play an aeronautical engineer on television, but it seems like it would have been better to have the tail shared as well.

I guess the proof is in the pudding, and it seemed to fly ok....!

Doc, seems mighty odd to me, too, but then so did a variant the first time I saw one -- the P-38.

Yeah - and the tails were also attached on the P-38, instead of just the wings. That seems like it would be very strong and not fatigue and crack metal or joints.

Of course this new-fangled one could have a one-piece body made of rubber or carbon-fiber for all I know.... :D

Here's an interesting article:

https://www.wired.com/story/stratolaunc ... aul-allen/

The wings are based on gigantic aluminum spars made by a special process, the same process being used for many other large components.

I wan't the only one who thought that, I see.

Joining the tails would make a MUCH stronger structure.

But perhaps since the payload is carried there, there's a logistical
reason not to do that. Maybe they're afraid that the released payload
will hit the horizontal stabilizer if it's joined. THAT would cause problems.....

It wasn't meant for regular flight, but as a way to launch rockets. It pretty much does away with the first stage.

That's my assumption as well.

Anyway, it's pretty cool, and makes sense.

I’m pretty sure that these days wing loading has been figured out. Also the fuselage is carbon composite. These parts are stronger than previous materials and practically form an exoskeleton.

Then tops fellow invented a thing called a wind tunnel in the fairly early part of the last century
That and the area rule probably figured into the engineering.

I’m not an aerospace engineer but I know a few. Including some that worked in the engineering of those carbon composite parts.
