I MUST be living right!

Post by TedH »

Last week will go down in history as one of my luckiest ever. I'm sure some of you are aware of the Levergun Postal Match that Ranch Dog puts on every year. I sent in a few of my sorry targets and ended up winning the Grand Prize of a Hog Hunt on his Texas ranch.
While I was still absorbing the news of my good fortune, I received a FedEx overnight letter from New York. Some of you may recall the African Safari Sweepstakes that the NRA put on a while back. Well I didn't win the Grand Prize of the African Safari, but I did win the First Prize. A cased Krieghoff Classic Big Five double rifle in 470 Nitro Express with a Schmidt and Bender scope! I was so excited about my streak of luck I ran out and bought some lottery tickets, but my luck apparently ended with the rifle.
The only down side is the fact that I will probably have to sell the rifle just so I can have the cash to pay the taxes on it! But I guess I'll deal with that when the time comes.

By the way, news of winning the rifle is what prompted me to remove the Ruger #1 from the market.

You lucky dog. I can't win a free trip to the bathroom.

I'd do whatever to keep the Krieghoff. It's something I'd probably never be able to afford myslef, or willing to buy with my hard earned dollars. Pass'er on down Daddy.

Man, good stuff, you must be doing something right to have great karma like this. Whatever the tax is on that baby pay it, how often does something like that come along? Looks like a heck of a shooter! Congrats.

You could take that rifle on tour. I'd pay to shoot it. Then you could deduct the traveling expenses as a business expense. Leave it up to us, we'll have you in the poor house in no time.

You lucky son of a gun.
Sell the rifle to pay the tax?
Just how much is the rifle worth?

Oh and I got a Bushnell Banner binoculars from the postal match.
He never did get the scoring right again with my targets, but I still got a prize. :)

They claimed an approx. retail value of $13K, which I believe will make the tax something over 3 grand.

That's great news. As 1886 said, it is good to hear of good things happening to good people.

Congrats, Ted!!! That's the ultimate plinker! I hope you can find a way to keep it. Good thing you won the Krieghoff this year before the Dems raise our taxes!

Congratulations!! Now I'm giving myself the boot to the backside for not sending any targets into Ranch Dog's postal match. I'm sure a number of other fellows are as well.

Don't sell the fancy rifle!! Sell your Ruger so you can pay the taxes on the fancy rifle. You can get another Ruger any day.

Just a thought on the tax.....I don’t know when the tax is actually incurred but I wonder if you waited until January to take possession of that beauty if it wouldn’t go on next years taxes giving you over a year to deal with the tax issue instead of just a few months.

FWIW

Dennis.

When I saw those prizes listed I though to myself.. "I'd rather have 2nd prize". While the African Safari is a once in a lifetime type thing, that rifle could be for many lifetimes. Your great grandchildren could still be enjoying it long after you're gone. (assuming you want it and can keep it)

Only problem with that is I would need four or five of those to sell to come up with enough cash. I have a relative that is a CPA, I will talk to her and see what my options are with the taxes.

I don't know what the law is there, but in Canada, any winnings are tax-free. Could it be the same in the US?

Good on you!
Im with Saloon slug you really should consider taking the rifle with you on the hog hunt, that would be cool.
Hopefully you can work away into keeping that rifle.

Unfortunately, no. It will be reported to the Internal Revenue Service as untaxed income.

Congrats, I couldn't even afford shells for it, it would have to go to the auction block if it were mine. But it is a once in a lifetime choice think hard about it.

Congratulations!

I'm wondering if you would also have to pay state sales tax on it as well.

13k of income for income tax, plus sales tax to the state. Don't forget anybody!
