Finished A New Knife Build - A Scalper

I ran across this Dexter/Russell 10" (blade) knife today @ a Salvation Army store @ $3 - and thought it might make up into a nice "Butcher Bowie".






Since I had a piece of a shed stag/antler (Whitetail), I wanted to graft it onto the blade after I cleaned the blade up.





So, I removed the plastic grip and gave the blade a preliminary cleanup.




I did a dummy fit, just to see if was doable.




I'm pretty sure it's a viable conversion - this is what it might look like when I'm done - I just have to decide about a crossguard, and fit everything.





We'll see how it comes out, at a future date ( que sera sera )……………..

Looks like it would make a good "camp knife". I have some similar knives here with a large carbon content steel that I thought about doing similar but after I got them home I decided the blades were not thick enough for my tastes (would not want to baton them). Good steel. Length is right for a camp knife. But blade thickness is more suited for a small game or trout/bird knife. Until inspiration strikes they now sit in the material reserve storage otherwise refereed to as the scrap heap by my wife.

What you have there is definitely a project I would like to see and hear more about as you go through the process.

Most of that style knife would be a little thin for most camp chores. It is a slicer after all. Food prep would be where I would leave it. Besides, you can sharpen a small piece of a finger thick branch and use it to baton into the log. No need to hit your knife.

It is called a breaking knife. I call ours the chicken splitter.

This knife's blade is 1/8" thick @ the back/spine, so it's not as thin as this "Rifleman's" pattern knife (center, below)

After trying various cross guard configs, I decided to go w/o one, simply dressing down the front end of the stag/antler a bit.







IDK if I'll make a sheath for it yet...………………

I like it a lot. Looks like a fur-chaser era trade knife to me. Good one.
