Menieres Disease....

Post by Blaine »

Blaine...many different forms of vertigo......Menieres is when the inner ear fills with fluid and then when it's full you go bonkers...sometimes these "bonkers" are so-so and other times they will lay you flat on the ground with zero control. There is no known cause and no cure...only management....I've become an expert at it...

Any degree of attack will keep you home with fear of going anywhere...in between attacks, you are a "nothing", accomplishing little, no way you can drive,

One of the most misdiagnosed ailments, doctors know little and attribute your problems to all kinds of different pelosi, sometime prescribing meds that make it worse. You pretty much spend your life saying to yourself, "WTF????".-----6

I've been meaning to have a post on this. Maybe if I get enough interest on this thread I will.
If I have it, it's not quite that bad for me. It's been constant for as long as I can remember. Sometimes if I turn my head, it feels like it keeps on spinning. Super loud ringing, and every so often a thunderclap and I can't hear out of that ear for an hour. Docs say I'm ok....Oh, well....

Maybe that's why we're so crabby all the time? :P

I have had ringing in my ears my whole life. I cannot understand what silence really is. If you put most people in a quiet room for long enough, they start hearing their own heartbeat. Not me. The neverending background sound of a circular saw drowns it out. The first time I heard a circular saw, I was surprised to hear what I always hear...only a little louder. That was when I was about 3 years old.

I can't remember not having ringing in my ears. All those years of jet engines, rivet guns and gunfire took their toll, I guess.

I have had three very pronounced cases of Meniere's in my practice. All have responded well to Blair Upper Cervical Chiropractic. There are a number of chiropractors specializing in that approach in the SeaTac area. Usually a misalignment of the Atlas vertebra is the issue.

Well before you go anywhere just pencil my name down for that Marlin 25-20 :D !
Six you are now Dr. Sixgun!! Self diagnosed & treated.
Though I have had vertigo just 3 times I can honestly say I dont wish that on anyone . Last time was the worst, couldn't hardly walk. That was caused by a sinus infection.
I do have some hearing loss. Between power tools and shooting its expected. Now I always have foam ear plugs in the watch pocket of my jeans. If it gets loud in go the plugs.

I don't know how many thousands of .22 and shotgun rounds I touched off as a kid. Hearing damage just wasn't important in those days. Hell, I joined the Army in '72 and the Drill Sergeant didn't enforce the ear plug "recommendations".... He said "You puss*s that need them go ahead. :o

I was diagnosed with high frequency deafness at 5 years old. Other than the falling down and being nauseated, I have had the other symptoms since about 3 years old. Nauseous means you make others sick. Nauseated is when you feel sick.

All sorts of electrolyte changes have been proposed, and sometimes help (more sodium, more potassium, more magnesium, and even more calcium). If you stick with over the counter products and doses usually you won't hurt much, but best to confer with physician before messing with them, and you may need higher doses anyway.

Also - if you haven't seen an audiologist, do so - a good audiologist can sometimes diagnose and treat stuff doctors miss.

Six, thanks for the information. The first patient I dealt with was a former Green Beret Lt. Col. He had extreme vertigo and nausea. He remarked to me that it was no fun laying on a men's room floor for 6 hrs. I am glad you found answer.

I have tinnitus pretty good but no balance problems thank heavens. One thing about guns is the loudest types still get through hearing protection. 40decibels is about the most you can block by covering the ears, even with two sets on, because vibration still gets through the skull and teeth which you can't block. Short barreled magnums with brakes are running 165-170Db you are left with 130-150db+ getting through depending on your plugs. Its part of the game and I think hunting a few times a year is no probs. The problem for me is shooting ranges if there are several guys letting off super magnums with muzzle brakes. You absorb more gun noise in one day than a lifetime of hunting. Espeically teaching kids to shoot I prefer to do it away from crowded ranges and stick to regular bores with long barrels. Sorry for the tangent post

Six, here is another experience. The most recent patient came to the office from about an hour away. He had to be driven and had difficulty walking steady. He was well used to how it went for him in these instances. I inherited him from another chiro that moved to Texas. I adjusted him few times in about two months. After one visit he told me he had gotten to the point that he thought he could run. I asked if he tried and he told me he had run an eight minute mile the week before. That is the range of function and disturbance in that case just considering balance and mobility.

The brain stem actually protrudes through an opening in the bottom of the skull. At the level of the first vertebra it becomes the spinal cord. The first vertebra, the Atlas, is made like and functions as a universal joint. The top joins to the occiput and functions to let the head nod forward and back. On the bottom it rotates on the axis vertebra which has a hub. So you have the most complicated vulnerable part of the central nervous system going through the center and somewhat exposed to pressure if this gets misaligned. It can create all kinds of disturbance depending on which nerve tracts are involved even vision and hearing and certainly involving vertigo in some cases.

Here are pictures of a plastic model that I marked with areas of taut and tender fibers in a system I developed to analyze misalignments. The center openings are where the brain stem and spinal cord traverse.

I KNOW that after I'm adjusted that I can see better! I wholeheartedly believe in chiropractors. I always get adjusted before a match. Does it help? Heck yes! If I can see a 4" dia orange clay bird going 100mph plus faster and easier darn right I'm a believer!

There are nerves that go down to mid back that go to a ganglion outside the spine. That ganglion sends fibers to the muscles that focus the eyes. I am always interested in the pathways that make things possible.

Here is a picture of an MRI showing an impingement into the back of the brain stem spinal cord juncture by the posterior arch of the Atlas vertebra.

Six, the closest guy to you doing what I am going is Dr. Brian Mehl near Seaside, NJ.

Sounds like yours is under control. I did not know there was a salt connection. Now a days with the internet it is common for the patient to know more about the condition than the Dr. Unless he is a specialist in the issue.
