1895 Winchester price check
Greetings to all. I haven't been on the forum in some time. I moved to Colorado and haven't been shooting much. There aren't any local silhouette matches which is what I really enjoy. But once a levergunner, always a levergunner!
Cabelas has Winchester 1895 in 30-06 here, made in 1921. It looks like it is mechanically in good shape and the bore looks good from the muzzle but I don't know for certain because they won't take the lock off to let me cycle the action and look at the chamber. The finish is a mix of brown and splotches of original blue. There is cobbed up hole in the receiver where somebody started to install a receiver sight and quit before they finished. I would put a receiver sight on it and either use the hole or cover it so it doesn't bother me. They are asking $700 for it which seems like a good price for a solid rifle.
I haven't been following the market lately. Is $700 a good price for that rifle?

Re: 1895 Winchester price check
Marc, that price doesn't seem out of line if the bore is in very good or better shape. I would darn sure make them take the lock off that rifle and let you give a thorough evaluation.
Thinking you should find some shoots in Colorado.

The price doesn’t seem bad at all, but the insanity of you can’t take the lock off to cycle the action, in all likelihood would cause me to walk away....mumbling about liberal tards.

Re: 1895 Winchester price check
No way I'd buy it at any price without seeing the bore, and checking the function of the action. But if they'll break down and remove the stupid trigger lock and it's a good gun, then the price is great. Without removing the lock, I'm not sure how you determined it looked to be "mechanically good shape"?

Many 1895's have excessive headspace from guys shooting up bucket loads of surplus ammo.. I don't read this, I've experienced beat up 1895's in '06. But even if it does have excessive headspace, it's nothing to size your brass accordingly and shoot cast....or even jacketed......keep your brass separate and go to town.----6
Throw the green on the table and say, "let's stop this childish pelosi, take the lock off." I've never seen a smokeless 1895 with a destroyed barrel.....I've seen em dark and mercuric pitted but they usually run OK.

Re: 1895 Winchester price check
The young lady that showed me the rifle knows their policy is insane. She explained that since you can't test the trigger, you can return the rifle if the trigger is not satisfactory. So you have to buy the rifle, take it out in the parking lot, take the lock off, check it out and return it if it isn't what you want. Goofy, but there it is.
Cabela's ain't what it used to be since Bass Pro bought them. We heard that the CEO does not care about hunting or shooting. The focus will be on fishing gear and clothing.
Anyway, I am not sure that rigamarole is worth it. If there is something wrong with it, it would at least cost me the price of the background check.

If this 1895 does not work out for you, there are good used Miroku/Winchester 1895 rifles to be found AND believe it or not, a few NIB or LNIB Miroku 1895s.

That is a viable option for some. I personally only want original old guns, and not clones. Even if they aren't like new, and show some wear. I just love that they've been around for over a century!

Re: 1895 Winchester price check
Not a bad price if it's in good condition. Might be worth the hassle to find out. At least you won't be wondering if you should have checked it out!

Re: 1895 Winchester price check
I would agree, if it was a pre-WWI. Those guns suffer the same problems as the pre-WWI 03 Springfield. The metal was just not up to 3006 pressures.Sixgun wrote: ↑Mon Feb 11, 2019 11:57 am Many 1895's have excessive headspace from guys shooting up bucket loads of surplus ammo.. This 1895 is a post WWI. This reminds me of the 92's that were converted to 44mag. The pre-WWI's usually grew headspace but the post guns seemed to do ok. They learned so much about metallurgy from the war efforts.
To me this 1921 DOM is a more desirable gun because it will have the advantage of the better metals, but is still a more historically correct desirable configuration. Top me that is a really good price, too.
As for the store polices, if you can get them to agree to take it back if there are any issues I would buy it.
If more people would do that and return guns, the paper work hassle will probably encourage them to change.

Re: 1895 Winchester price check
Thanks Nate......wish I knew all this pelosi "back in the day"....I turned down lots of good stuff because I was weary on the mechanics.....like that first gen Bisley in 38-40 that was an honest 50% gun that I bought for $400 in 1976 and sold it a month later because the cases would swell a bit more than I thought they should...it shot great.....all I had to do is keep that brass separate, back out the sizing die and load em.----6
Re: 1895 Winchester price check
Well, I never went back. The rifle was in the Glendale, AZ Cabela's. I was in the Phoenix area on other business and never had the time or inclination to deal with the Phoenix traffic to go back. I guess I also have trouble supporting the idiocy of it all. I am back in Colorado now.
Nate is right, according to an online serial number lookup, this rifle was made in 1921. Don't know how he knows that, I could never find the rifle listed on line. I also agree with Marlinman. I like the originals! It did have a couple of other cosmetic flaws. There are some shallow drill marks on the top of the left receiver wall where somebody might have tried to drill for a sight and the right side of the receiver has a spot that looked like it rattled against something or it could have been rust pitting. I couldn't tell with the light I had. I cast a critical eye on the locking bolt and the back end of the bolt and it looked tight. I probably would have bought it if they had let me look at it since I have a soft spot for 95's and I wouldn't worry about drilling it for a receiver sight since it already had one hole. Oh well, there are more 95's in the world!
