AR-15's are NOT "direct gas impingement"

I have always thought that the description of AR's as "direct gas impingement" was not right.

Maybe just semantic nit-picking, but the video was not only good in that it reaffirmed my nerdy insistence that AR's are more complex than DGI guns, but was just a nice overview.

What I found interesting is at 2:!4 in the video when the slow motion part starts that shows the recoil. Look at the muzzle brake. Look how much vibration there is at the end of that barrel ... it's jumping all over the place.

I got my first AR-15 back in the 70's when Colt was the only game in town. It was a learning experience for sure. One day at the range a guy had an AR-180. After seeing the AR-180 I had to shake my head as to why the AR-15 ever became a thing. Now I hear Brownells is making a retro AR-180 upper that will fit milspec AR lowers. I'm seriously considering one of them.

Guess I never really cared exactly how they worked, just happy that they worked well for me.

I guess what impresses me is that unlike Mauser bolt-actions, Remington rolling-blocks, Marlin 1889's, Uzi's, M1A's, and their derivatives, all of which are amazing, but 'simple' and basic, and of-few-parts, the AR-15's seem like they have so many small parts, so many 'steps' in the way the action works, and so on, that it seems like they'd never work.....but they do....! It also seems like they'd be far more vulnerable to irregular environments, dirt, and wear-and-tear than they are.

I guess that's why I'm not a gun-designer.... :D

Expansion chamber? The gas impinges on the key on top of the bolt carrier group and pushes it backward, then the piston rings form a seal in the portion of the bolt carrier that is to direct the used gas out the holes on the side. The so called expansion chamber is to cool and re-direct the hot gasses. The movement of the bolt is because ov the hot gasses being redirected to impinge directly on the bolt carrier group. The straight back action is due to the delayed release of the chamber and the buffer system. The opening to let the directly impinging gas out is blocked until the bolt carrier group moves back and the cam twists to unlock the bolt.

I guess the gears on a BLR make a gear driven bolt gun and not a lever action according to that guy on youtube.

I would call it DI.
I would also say it's pretty simple, as semi autos go.
An M1 is more complicated, with more small parts.
