How do you carry your 1911?
Open carry isn't much of a challenge, but concealed is. I am very sorry to report that my waistline real estate has been expanding at an alarming rate recently, so I have more, um, "room" to hide a 1911, but at 5'9" and 175, not as much as some. I am looking at high-ride crossdraw rigs to conceal a Commander-size auto, but thought I would poll the cognoscenti here about what leather y'all like and in what configuration.
Re: How do you carry your 1911?
I carry a XDs 45, and am fat no problems with the holster it came with.

Re: How do you carry your 1911?
I’m 5’10” and 200 . I carry my Kimber 1911 5” 45 ACP in a Galco Silhouette high ride and two extra clips in a Galco leather on my left side . I usually just wear my outter shirt untucked . I’m not sure how this will work with my Kimber 1911 6” 10mm but time will eventually tell . To be 100% honest if it hadn’t been for that fiasco I Charlottesville VA two summers ago I’d never gotten a concealed carry permit or carry concealed or otherwise .
Parkers , Mannlicher Schoenauer’s , 6.5mm's and my family in the Philippines !
Re: How do you carry your 1911?
I have all three sizes of 1911. I carry them all strong side IWB. I use a Blade Tech Nano kydex or a Milt Sparks Summer Special 2.
I'm 6 feet and weigh 195. Never had a problem concealing. In summer, however, I use the Officers if not wearing much.

Re: How do you carry your 1911?
I carry mine disguised as a Glock 23... last 1911 I had a good friend wanted so I sold it and didnt replace it.
Since we are NOT ALLOWED to carry ,heck it's hard enough to get a purchase permit, takes weeks to get one!
When I lived in CO open carry was legal so I carried OWB in a pancake I made. In the winter it was a shoulder rig.

Being as I much prefer cross draw to anything else I understand the OP's attraction to it. This is my current favorite non custom holster. It's from Simply Rugged.
This is for a full size 1911. I'm only 5'8" on a tall day and have no problems concealing.

I am a fat guy just so we are all on the same page, and left handed. I carry my full size in a Wild Bills Holster IWB. It is the first holster I have used for a year or more. I have a box of stuff that didn’t work for me. I have one for my 1911, my Glock 23, and I bought one for my Son and his XD, and one for my DIL.

Re: How do you carry your 1911?
I have Gov't & Commander 1911s, wear the Commander in a Milt Sparks Summertime Special. The Gov't mdls I wear in a strongside Biachi "Blackwidow" or a left armpit shoulder holster... it's the least comfortable, but for a Gov't mdl, the best concealed. Always in condition 1...
Pictured above with my "Wild Bunch" competition rig.
But I have a couple of others:
My duty holster (off Sam Browne belt), Count Sixula's Tanker holster & my 3-Gun holster (also off its belt).
So... 7 holsters for 5 used 1911s... that must be about average, yes? I mean, I have 3 holsters for one S&W... well... okay, 2 of them are the same, just different colors!

Re: How do you carry your 1911?
Usually an OWB strongside for 2 of my normal CCW's - Taurus PT-92 (Bianchi 3S), and/or Ruger Redhawk 45 Colt/ACP (holster labeled 'Ruger' - unsure maker) - the doublestack 1911 (ParaOrd-14) goes in an El Paso pancake. All are 'big' guns, but rarely does anyone of significance spot them unless I wear too-short a sweater or polo-shirt. Where I live/work, being spotted is no big deal, though (most people I deal with think you're a bit odd if you don't carry a gun). If I were in 'iffy' CCW-land, I would probably use an IWB or vertical shoulder rig.
When I used to work for an employer that prohibited CCW, I did carry the 1911 in a vertical shoulder rig, but also carried a blank-firing Beretta 92 replica in an IWB flank holster. They wanted to fire me anyway because I wouldn't cooperate and give crappy healthcare to people, so I figured any day one of the supervisors might come in and say they heard I carried a gun as an excuse to fire me. At that point I would humbly get out the Beretta 92 replica and explain that it was just a rumor and I really wasn't comfortable around real guns...
As an aside, when in my early 20's, I only owned two handguns; a Ruger Mark-122 LR, and a Ruger Super Blackhawk 44 Magnum....I was working nights as a pharmacy intern in some bad neighborhood stores in Cincinnati, and CCW there was essentially 'illegal'. Despite that, I carried the Super Blackhawk in a Bianchi X-15 shoulder rig under my little white 'intern' coat, and never got spotted....
People don't really notice much unless they are cops and have a reason to check you out.
Bottom line: forget about trying to show off that manly figure, and wear loose clothing...!

Jackass shoulder rig with 2 spare magazines works for me.
Re: How do you carry your 1911?
Most of the time I carry a Kimber Ultra Eclipse, 3" barrel. Got a Sneaky Pete holster. Look like a elec. day planner, or large phone or calculator on the outside. Can carry it with shorts and no shirt, of one is inclined for that. My style is tee shirt with jeans, in warm weather and the case is right out in the open. Flap is held closed with just a couple of magnets. For other times with more layers of clothing on, belt rig with extra mags under a coat or sweater. Then is it a Para Ord. with a 6" slide
Belt is to hold up the holster and suspenders to hold up my pants.

Oldwin, that Milt Sparks Summer Special is such a classic. Old Jeff Cooper, God rest his soul, was a big fan. I have tried IWBs, but found them uncomfortable, or requiring I buy looser jeans.
Re: How do you carry your 1911?
Thank you Bill! I think as highly of the Colonel as of the 1911.
Yes, "sizing up" a little is sometimes required. The secret to IWB, I have found, is making it and it's requirements a habit. After 30 years I don't even notice.
In the summer months I have found that appendix carry allows me to carry "more gun" than would be possible strong side.
My son got me on to this. There is a much bigger learning curve and quirks than IWB, but it works well.

Re: How do you carry your 1911?
OldWin, I held a CCW license back in Oregon, but it is worthless here in New Mexico, which requires a much more rigorous two-day course involving several hundred rounds of live fire. Heretofore, I have been pretty casual about carrying, usually limited to when out in the woods, that sort of thing, occasionally slipping an LCP in the pocket. I have decided to get more serious about it down here, and I may need to take a closer look at IWB carry, versus the high cross-draw option. Neat thing is El Paso Saddlery is about 90 minutes away.
Re: How do you carry your 1911?
I'd say that's a good plan, Bill!
I've had a carry permit since I was 18. Actually, 3 days before. My dad went and got it for me. Now, Maine is constitutional carry. There are pluses and minuses to this, naturally, but I always err on the side of freedom.
The requirements may seem like a pain, but in reality, most practice will fall to yourself. I wish I did more, myself.
Carrying is a commitment. But I can't imagine myself without it.

Pooh, I had a Kramer horsehide some years back. Very fine holster.
Re: How do you carry your 1911?
Bill, yup that’s a favorite of mine! Just touch it up when the dye wears off and it looks good too. Most any well made holster will last a long time, and today we have so many more choices than 30 years ago. There’s a lot of good choices out there.

1911 goes in a Fobus pancake holster.
Other stuff goes in a Simply Rugged pancake holster.
Mostly I carry a ROSSI MODEL R46202 in 357 Magnum
in the aforementioned Simply Rugged Pancake.
They're a great company. I also have their Leatherman case and
key ring belt holder, both of which I've worn daily for some years now.

Re: How do you carry your 1911?
I use the same Roy's Original Pancake Holster that Pitchy uses. It's as good as it gets for concealed carry of a 1911. But nothing is really great for concealed carry of a 1911 in warmer climates where lighter clothing is the norm. I always struggle with ensuring the gun is covered, and wont be revealed as I move or bend over.
I just ordered one of those inexpensive black elastic velcro style rigs that wraps around your waist and keeps the gun closer to your body. Since it's an under clothing style, it allows the muzzle to be under your pants to help conceal the gun. Hopefully it will make concealment of a large handgun easier. If not, they aren't much money, and wont be a big loss if I don't like it.

Vall, I have one of those by Bulldog. OK. I prefer to wear it over an Underarmour tee and not against my bare hide.
Also have one of these from 5.11. First heard of these when a guy showed up at the gun counter at Sportsmans and asked if I noticed he was packing a four-inch N frame!

Re: How do you carry your 1911?
Yes Bill, I figure I'll wear it over my T shirt, and slightly under my belt line of my pants to keep it in place. At least I try that, and see if it's comfortable this way. If not I'll go back to the pancake holster. It's winter here, so no problem to conceal carry easily.

Re: How do you carry your 1911?
In the summer when I'm dressed light, I usually have to revert to an Officers if I carry strong side IWB.
I don't care for the Officers as much, but it's a compromise I have to make in the heat.
I'm ashamed to admit that in hot weather I sometimes go with a Glock 19 in the appendix position. Conceals easier and I don't care if I sweat all over it.

Re: How do you carry your 1911?
Been carrying in the same horsehide Kramer IWB since the early 90's. Great rig. When I carry my Officers ACP it's in a Safariland Paddle. I have a Galco Avenger, but find it does not give me enough concealment for anything lighter than a winter coat. If I had to pick one do it all it would be the Kramer. Even carrying many more pounds on my waist than I did when I bought it, still works really well.

Re: How do you carry your 1911?
I snagged a double-stack version (Para Ordnance P-12) of the 'Officers Model' a few years ago, and it holds 12 rounds in the magazine... The grip is only 3/16ths greater circumference, and actually feels far better in-hand than the regular Officers Model does to my hands. If you can find one, you might look in to that. Mine got dinged up a bit through hard use, and a few years ago I had it Parkerized at the local gun shop, and it is darned near impervious now. It has been 100% reliable with zero stoppages in around 2,000 rounds to date.

Re: How do you carry your 1911?
Thanks Doc.
It's not the circumference, but the shortness I don't care for. I packed a steel Colt Officers for several years. It was fairly customized, and a nice pistol, but swapped it for a LW Commander. The one I have now is a SA Loaded Micro Compact. It too is nice, but the last couple summers I've been carrying a Glock 19 appendix in hot weather.
I know......I know. Blasphemy!

Usually back by my hip pocket .... tho I have carried it up front .. I have friends who are nervous about carrying cocked and locked and pointing at their privates, but don't seem to mind carrying cocked and locked pointed at their femoral artery. Whatever. If it works for you and you are comfortable with, go for it.
It's just an old plain jane 1911 with no special sights, no trick anything, no ambi safety ... like JB designed it ..

Hip pocket of my bibbies. Worked really well with my 4" bbl. Rock island that disappeared from my book case a couple of months ago. Been carrying a 3 1/2", nickled 1917 Smith 45ACP using full moon clips lately. I have a Safariland shoulder rig for it or an old Bianchi IWB that is impossible to reholster without pulling my pants down.

When our Dept. went from allowing you to qualify with any rig or gun, to requiring you qualify with the gun and rig you wore daily... many deputies changed their rig & gun dramatically. The first few that tried to qualify with an IWB were comical. Quite a few dropped guns, etc...M. M. Jim, isn't that what they used to call "Mexican carry"? I have done it some and it is frankly pretty comfortable in some circumstances.

Re: How do you carry your 1911?
Inside the waistband with a large semiauto handgun has never been comfortable for me when seated. It is very comfortable standing or walking around though.
I received the elastic waistband holster a couple days ago, and wore it around the house all of one day with my 1911 in it. Next day I used my S&W 59 in it all day. Both guns were comfortable whether I was standing or seated, and because of the elastic holster I was able to run up and down stairs and move freely without worrying the gun would fall out. I also was able to easily adjust the angle the gun sits at easily, so sitting down was quite comfortable too.
I think I'll use this cheap holster system a lot in the future. But still use my pancake holster when I open carry out hunting, or fishing.

I think I'll use this cheap holster system a lot in the future. But still use my pancake holster when I open carry out hunting, or fishing.

One of my favorites is a Yaqui slide. Not much leather to increase the bulk.

Even with all of my different holsters and pistols I still Mexican carry often, mostly the Colt SAA 5 1/2 inch .45 that seems to enjoy riding there.

At the moment, I am using what I think is a JM Custom Kydex OWB, but the OP specified “leather,” so that would be a Josh Bulman Forward Drop Scabbard or Milt Sparks VM II, depending upon the trousers and the environment.
I have other nice leather holsters, including a Davis Taylor Omega, but my three current 1911 pistols have forward serrations, which grab and tear most cowhide. I do not really desire front serrations, but favor a specific maker’s frames, for the handling qualities, and forward serrations are standard on the 5” guns. So, for now, some of my holsters are in hibernation.
For several years, in the Nineties, I used a Galco Avenger, to tote a BHP, and later 1911 pistols. I am not sure that I still have it.

Now that it is in the upper 50s to lower sixties around Dallas, it is cold enough for a heavy coat that can conceal a 1911.

Re: How do you carry your 1911?
It's too heavy for me now, my back is so screwed up I cant take the weight, plus it's almost impossible to conceal wearing hot weather clothes. I DO carry my "little 1911" Sig P238 in a Galco pocket holster. I figure 6 rounds of .380 in the pocket is going to be more effective than the 8 rounds of .45 I left in the glove box of the truck.

I am contemplating acquiring a similar springer 911 but am unsure if condition 1 - cocked and locked, is safe for pocket carry.jnyork wrote: ↑Wed Dec 26, 2018 2:51 pm It's too heavy for me now, my back is so screwed up I cant take the weight, plus it's almost impossible to conceal wearing hot weather clothes. Kimberly Custom CDP in a Milt Sparks IWB behind my right hip. Spare mag same on opposite side. I believe in the "gray man" concept so it's always loose, plain clothes, back in the corner facing the door. In certain situations it is a Charter Arms 44 Special snub carried the same.

Re: How do you carry your 1911?
For the security team, I carry a Para-Ordnance P13.45 - think "commander" size but a wide body. I use a leather outside the waistband holster (I got from MidwayUSA) on my strong side. At 6' 0" and 160 lbs, I can still conceal it, but my sports coat is 1 size too large for "regular" wear.
