Winchester model 70 .22 K hornet value

Post by Booger Bill »

How would you price this? Not for sale yet. It`s a first year (1937) hornet that someone rechambered to K hornet before me. It`s been drilled and tapped with extra holes for the scope. Also the stock probably has been refinished. I do have RCBS dyes and cases & ammo etc. I have owned the gun for about 45 years and only played with it a few times. I didn't know it was rechambered until after I bought it. I did get a letter from winchester (need to find it) that it was made in 1937. IIRC, I think the barrel is dated 1935 under the stock so figure winchester probably used a model 52 left over barrel for this early first model 70 hornet. Thanks!

I used to have a circa 1938 Winchester Model 70 in 22 Hornet . Little gun had been reblued and refinished in a very nice fashion . Little thing shot some really nice 100 yard groups with handloaded Nosler 40 grain BT’s . Only fault I found was the weight .

I agree, why such a heavy rifle for such a puny cartridge! Since I got into this I have been playing with gunbroker and finally figured how to get into past sales. That will help me a lot as most of my collection is unaltered standard guns. It`s the ones like this rechambered hornet that is harder to figure real time value than christmas tree guns. Maybe I can lighten up here now. By the way, my model 70 takes the earlier .222 bullets, not the later .223 that they went to.

My Turkey gun - .22 Hornet over 12 gauge. Very effective, but not light weight.

BB,
Put that Hornet bullet either in the heart or lower back for one shot kills with no meat damage.
Makes for great eating too. :)

Wow! What's the serial number? They did start at number 1 in '37. A very low number adds value. If the gun was "right", it would be an easy 25....the way it is....maybe a grand.---6

Let's pretend the gun is right and the number is 82....then your looking at 5 big ones.

I don't think I got hurt. It was on the bulletin board at work about 1972 for I think, $140. I found out it was K hornet but kept it. I doubt the seller knew it. There are a lot of turkeys around here but I hear they are tough eating. Someone must feed them in a area about fifteen miles from here. I can drive by there at any given time and see a dozen or so. They are tame and not skittish. The serial # is 8039.
Here is another model 70 I have. It`s about 1955 and in 300 H&H.
Sorry, posted the wrong picture. Here is the right one for the 300 H&H.
