Value of a 1895 Winchester carbine

Post by Booger Bill »

This is in .30 army. (30/40) When I bought it the rear sight was missing. a friend gave me another sight that fits without drilling but the handguard wont fit over it. I have the handguard. What should this bring if/when I decide to sell it? Thanks!

That is a trophy. If the handguard won't fit over the rear sight it's most likely a Springfield / Krag sight. Not a big deal as they were very similar. Or even more rare would be the rear sight from an 1895 Musket. I'll add a picture of one o f those in a few. An 1895 SRC in .30-40 can have a huge hitory behind it depending on the serial number.

One like that would easily fetch $1500 or more at auction, depending on the condition of the bore.

Nice! I've never owned a 95.
If I did, I want a carbine in 30-40.

Hard to tell but it appears to be a sight off a 45-70 trapdoor. If bore is good I think it should bring closer to $2000.
there is no such thing as a miss if you still have ammo

1895 Musket rear sight.

The musket and SRC upper handguards are very similar but not identical. There's a slight difference between them. I have a spare SRC handguard that I picked up years ago waiting for a home on a half naked SRC.

I have the handguard but it was cracked. A friend gave me and put on the sight. He told me the name of it and I have a memory block, it will come to me. I would like to fantasize it was a Texas or Arizona rangers gun as it did come from arizona I was told. I have shot it and was surprised with the accuracy. I have owned it for 40 years or so.

Looks a bit like a Buffington (Springfield) rear sight with the adjustment knobs up front. Doesn't really matter, it's a nice carbine in good shape. I have one similar In .30-06 that's been my woods walking / cabin gun since I bought it about 25 years ago.

That's it! My old friend that put it on said it was a buffington.

The sight alone is worth $100-200 depending on where you are and the condition. It's quite common on 95 SRCs. The 1895s have been my favorites since I bought my first SRC about 25 years ago.

I've wanted a .30/40 carbine ever since I saw Sam Elliot with one in the movie THE ROUGH RIDERS. That is a slick looking carbine! It's a shame they can't make them again.

Somewhere in the last year I read a article WITH a picture where a crate of them new was found and was for sale but all were to be sold as a unit! Anyone else see that?

Bill you're starting to scare me. I see you posting a lot of questions about values of some fine old pieces like you're trying to liquidate. Are you feeling OK?

Just got out of a four day hospital stay. I feel pretty good though. I do have medicare but used up my lifetime maximum supplemental insurance from my old job so anticipate about 20% of the bill I will have to pay. Thanks. I lost a lot of blood due to taking meloxicam and xarelto together that tore up my stomach. I am just laying around trying to recuperate. Guess I just have too much time on my hands.

Thanks. I feel fine, just real weak yet. Biggest problem is I can no longer take the meloxicam and now my joints and feet ache. I didn't know the medicine was masking it.

Lots of other things to consider....

Topical like the simple over-the-counter IcyHot, Biofreeze, ZostrixHP, AustralianDream, or PainWizard (they are all slightly different, so don't give up on OTC topical just because one or two fail).

Topical prescription ones like Voltargen gel - now that it is generic it is affordable.

Topical 'compounded' ones - a TOTALLY different realm than what you'll get at your neighborhood drug-store, and a totally different set of options than your specialists are likely to have ever heard of (or even your primary care docs, most likely). To get a hint of what's available find yourself a local "compounding pharmacy" - preferably NOT a 'chain store' that just has added 'compounding' - you need a pharmacist who took extra training and knows LOTS of stuff that just isn't taught in regular pharmacy or medical schools. Talk to them and I'll bet they can get some ideas what might help. THEN the trick is getting your doctor to prescribe such things, but it IS possible, if your doctor is willing to admit that someone who takes SIX years of pharmacy school just might know more about 'medicines' than someone who takes FOUR years of medical school, where 'medications' is just part of the curriculum. I did BOTH, and had to study harder in pharmacy school (perhaps just because it was the first degree, but still, there is LOTS they learn - unfortunately like most physicians, they get out and into a job where 'knowledge' isn't valued - just the reimbursement the insurance companies will fork over as a result of their particular credentials.

I use topical NSAID,s topical gabapentin, topical muscle relaxants, topical anesthetics, and lots of other things that work WAY better topically, with fewer side effects, versus orally.

I also do specialized lab testing by companies like Ethos (does 'pain medicine urine screens' but also tests for urine biomarkers for neurotransmitters), Vibrant (does 'gut barrier' testing but some of them also involve neurologic and inflammation markers to guide therapy), and BostonHeart or Cleveland Clinic (looking for MTHFR mutations that are VERY common, and mitigating them with simple things like the 'active' forms of various B-complex vitamins is cheap and easy). Also if your testosterone/estrogen ratio is off, or the amounts too low, you can get relief there (plus improve your lipids and insulin/sugar levels, as well as reduce your likelihood of prostate cancer killing you). Even using Zilis (a full-spectrum hemp oil) instead of 'CBD' oil, has helped many of my patients with arthritis pain resume normal function. Those things can make a WORLD of difference regarding inflammation and pain. I've taken patients who couldn't sleep due to pain, and were on six to eight percocet per day, and gotten them to where they sleep fine, wake refreshed, and have way less pain and more energy.

Remember, you don't have to go to an 'in-network' primary care doctor - there are many out there who won't belong to any 'network' because the networks require us to do crappy, shoddy, inferior, unethical care, and some of us won't do that. Yes, you have to look out for the rip-off artists among the 'alternative medicine' docs too, but at least there is some chance you'll find someone who is looking to do quality work on your behalf.

AJMD429, Thanks! That's a lot for me to digest but I will try to figure all that out. Anything to do medically, I am the dumbest. You put a lot of earned knowledge in that post and I appreciate it! Just before I went to emergency I finally googled the medicines I was taking and read that the xarelto and meloxicam taken together was a no no and that's pretty much what they told me after the tests. I was glad it wasn't cancer. They took me permanently off the meloxicam, also stopped the xarelto for two weeks and put me on iron pills. Trouble is the iron also looks like blood in stool. I don't know the real difference. Wish they had briefed me on that. I did call, but wasn't called back yet. Still am weak. Thanks!
