Another prayer request, for another wildfire
We know our friend Shasta lost his home in the Redding fire. Now a lifelong friend, a fine father, a man of faith and the owner of his grandpa's 1886 in .33 Winchester could use prayers as the Camp Fire burns hot and erratically toward Chico, California, this afternoon. Started at 100 acres this morning and is now beyond 8,000 and growing, with strong winds and low humidities. Friend Matt just heard his road in the Butte Creek Canyon is now on fire.

Now at 18,000 acres and growing fast. My friend said that as he left his place he could see flames and hear propane tanks exploding around the neighborhood.

Wow, that has to be a scary situation.
Best of luck to your friend!!
One big reason I live in a wet, humid environment.
I was about 11 or twelve and was on vacation with my parents when we were forced to evacuate due to a forest fire. I remember how scared my mother was and will never forget it.

Now 70,000 acres, five percent contained, with thousands of homes destroyed and probable fatalities.

Re: Another prayer request, for another wildfire
My buddy just got a message from Cal Fire that they are staged in HIS YARD trying to stop the advance, and that only about 20 of the 400 homes in his canyon are still standing. Wow, that's tough. God bless emergency responders wherever they are.
Re: Another prayer request, for another wildfire
This morning I left the house at 0345. I was headed to Thousand Oaks. About half way there I heard the freeway was closed going north. I called my co worker and told him we'd just call it a day and make a really long weekend out of it. By the time I got back home The fires, there were two, had blown up. Now, a scant 16 hours later the fire has burned itself to the ocean. Folks, it's a heck of a long way from thousand oaks to the pacific ocean. If you have never seen how fast a wild fire can move you'd never believe it.
Then there's the fire in Paradise. Until a short time ago my baby sister lived in Paradise. The house she lived in is gone. Two of her nephews families managed to get out, driving through a tunnel of fire. They have absolutely nothing except some badly scorched cars and the clothes on their backs. Some folks weren't so lucky. If you've never seen what fire can do to a human being, could your blessings.
So folks, I'll add my plea for prayers for those effected. I know He was looking out for me when I decided against making the transition from the San Diego Freeway to the Ventura Freeway this morning. I went home. Thousands have no home to go to tonight. I pray that tomorrow they will find their homes still standing.

My soon to be Brother-in-Law lives in Paradise, CA. Was in Wisconsin on business when he was informed of the fire. Flew back last night and is currently at a friend's house waiting for permission to return. Was told that house and everything a complete loss. Scary how fast the fire moved.

Re: Another prayer request, for another wildfire
As of this morning, 90,000 acres burned, 6,450 structures lost, and nine confirmed dead. Late yesterday, my friend was told his home was still standing. Hope it survived the night.
For those with connections to Paradise, local news is reporting small pockets of the town appeared to have been spared.

Steve, so glad your friend is safe. Hope some of those 35 still missing are found alive. It's a horrible way to pass.

Re: Another prayer request, for another wildfire
They found thirteen more sets of remains, for a total of 42.
Re: Another prayer request, for another wildfire
Statewide total now 52. This is likely to go higher. I heard from my sister's nephew that they had very little warning. Couple that with the large elderly population in Paradise (some don't drive, and some that do shouldn't) and it was a really bad situation.

Re: Another prayer request, for another wildfire
Toll for the Camp Fire alone is up to 54 this morning, with scores still missing, so many of them elderly. It's awful to think about.
Re: Another prayer request, for another wildfire
Hey everyone....checking in from Chico. Dad's house is on the east side of Chico up towards the foothills. We had the fire come down to the fenceline. The dozers cut a fireline around the houses and the fire crews lit off a back fire. That pushed the fire south into some low grass pastures which was easy to extinguish. But we had the trucks loaded and ready to go if the wind shifted. We had the water on around the house and up on the roof. Thankfully no houses lost here. Just burned fences and scorched trees.
It was that freaking close.
All is well here with the family thank God. We've been gathering supplies and donations for the Red Cross and local groups. Cleaned out all of the old camping gear. Someone can surely use it. My relatives in Sacramento are gathering a couple of truckloads of supplies and coming north to help.
I never thought I'd see my old hometown become a tent city. My mom taught at Paradise Elementary for almost 20 years and I went to kindergarten through 4th grade there. Now it's gone. My dad and I used to deer hunt up towards Concow and Big Bend....now its a wasteland. It breaks my heart every day when I think about what has happened and what and who we've lost. Hundreds are missing. Over 11 thousand homes gone. Now over 60 lives lost.
But Butte County folks are tough as nails. Paradise, Concow, and Magalia will come back. No question.
A lot of firefighters, LEOs, Guardsmen, and EMS techs will be drinking and eating for free around here for a long, long time. They are truly the cream of the crop. Heroes all.

Re: Another prayer request, for another wildfire
It's nice to hear some good news out of Butte County, Stew. The numbers just get worse each day as the scope of the tragedy unfolds. My friend got a photo of their rental in Paradise -- total scraper. Still hasn't been allowed into Butte Creek Canyon to see how much damage his surviving home sustained.
Just when it seems things can't get worse, I saw reports of norovirus sweeping through some of the evacuation centers. No fun even in the best of times.

Re: Another prayer request, for another wildfire
Latest rumor circulating among the evacuees in Chico is that two dozen kids from the Paradise Boys and Girls Club are among the missing. Rain is on the way, which will help the recovery effort gain speed.
