1899 Savage Rifle help

Post by roundshoes »

I purchased a Model 1899 Savage Rifle (indicated on top of receiver) today in 250-3000 chambering. This is a take-down rifle. The serial number is 257XXX. The Savage Book states that the rifle was made in 1924 while same book shows that 1899's in 250-3000 chambering were made from 1914 to 1920. The fore-arm has same serial number but nothing on barrel for validation. Would anybody help with my confusion? Thanks.

I did have one years ago that based on the book and online they were off by several years. I noticed over the years by reading other forum messages and articles the older it is it's difficult to pinpoint the exact date. To know for sure you need to have it lettered from factory or someone that's reputable but the ones I know are retired.

The .250-3000 was offered well after WWII, so not sure why any books would say it wasn't offered later? The .250-3000 was first offered in 1915. The takedown version was first offered in 1907, and went up until at least close to WWII. It was still cataloged in the 1936 catalog I have.

Supposedly they were only marked 250 Savage after 1935 or so, not 250-3000. But my 99 that was made in 1954 was marked 250-3000 Savage. Doesn’t really answer your question but hope you do find the answer. Todd/3leg

30/30 Winchester: Not accurate enough fer varmints, barely adequate for small deer; BUT In a 10" to 14" barrelled pistol; is good for moose/elk to 200 yards; ground squirrels to 300 metres

250 Savage... its what the 223 wishes it could be...!

It may be worthwhile to remember that most books are NOT written in stone...………..

Jay Kimmel's book on Savage/Stevens history is pretty good resource. I've looked at the more recent Savage book by Royal, and it's got way too many errors for me to purchase. Murray's book is another decent one, and has good info.
