Slings on a take down rilfe

Post by Scrumbag »

Hi folks,

I have a Chiappa Alaskan takedown I'm looking to put a sling on for hunting.

There are no sling studs, not sure I like the idea of a magazine tube clamp like brass stacker and some of the "leather loop" options look a little goofy (I'd be willing to be proved wrong)

Anyone have any recommendations? Is it best to just put sling studs in?

.

I bought this one, many, many years ago - but it's fairly simple to sew one up from a 48" length X 1" wide black Cordua nylon strapping/belting, a 6" length of elastic cloth the same width, and a 1/2" long piece of 3/8" I.D. black plastic tubing.

According to this article (see last paragraph) "Further features include a 20” octagonal barrel that is drilled and tapped for QD sling swivels . . ." :?:

My TD Winnie 1895 and 1886 rifles are so heavy that the Uncle Mikes screw- on barrel sling swivels come loose in the field.

A gun smith installed permanent barrel sling swivel like the one on the 1895 below would be a good solution for my 1895.

Does anyone have a good solution for my Winnie 1886 TD ?

Being of the mind that a rifle should be in the hands unless climbing a tree stand or the animal is on the ground, when hunting. I bought a 1 inch wide relatively thin piece of leather about 4 feet long(don’t recall exactly). I cut a slit in each end an inch to inch and a half longways at each end. I keep it rolled up secured by a rubber band in my pocket. When needed I unroll secure the strap around and under the butt as seen in the black nylon pic above then pull the main part of the strap through the slit on the barrel end and put barrel and mag tube through the loop pull tight and you can carry rifle over your back while dragging that big buck. Get to the truck, cabin whatever and roll it back up rubber band it drop back in you hunting coat and ready for the next trip.

The last two posts reminded that I have a little used Torel leather sling with adjustable loops on each end and a belt buckle length adjustment in the middle! I used this on my old pump shotgun when turkey hunting- so I could sling the gun and use two hands to operate my box call. I will give it a try!

I was in the same boat with my Savage 99 until Pete44ru had good idea on his sling setup. I wanted it in leather so I found one online and just came in today.

Takes seconds to put on and take off. Like it a lot!

Interesting - I'm not sure where? Certainly not on mine. The barrel is drilled and tapped for a scope mount but the mag tube runs the full length of the barrel so unless you drill and tap into the side of the barrel, not sure where you would put it...

That's a nice looking sling on Mainehunter's Savage -- I have a very similar one (with a different color weave) on my Flintlock that's made by Leatherman (no, not the multi-tool company); wonder if it's from the same maker. The leather work on that one looks like mine does.

One other option I learned on this site is for the rear sling attachment -- you can feed a piece of leather up under the recoil pad, mark the 2 holes, and secure it under the pad with the 2 screws. It will never come loose until you want it off, but there's no permanent alterations (or holes) in the rifle. Up front, a QD stud on the barrel would work, or you can order an extra foreend cap or barrel band and thread one for a QD stud.

Good luck.
