Range time this morning.

Post by 2ndovc »

Been busy around here lately with all the storms but I wanted to get out this morning and burn some powder.

The H&R top break post reminded me that I haven't had Grandpa's Iver Johnson out in a very long time. Did pretty well for 25 yrds with some Federal American Eagle 40 gr LRN bullets. It's not Grandpa B's Colt Match Target but it would do just fine for around the farm, just like Herr Struble used it.
Shot the Ruger .327 Federal with some new bullets I'd gotten from Gunbroker. I started with a very light load and the groups were much larger than usual so I think I need to speed them up a bit. That flyer out in Left Field was me. A bee decided to land on my glasses just as I pulled the trigger.

Wanted to shoot the Mini 30 this morning. I really love this little rifle but keep having magazine issues, even with factory magazines. I've looked around on the internet, seems the problem is weak magazine springs. The last round, no matter what bullet profile lodges against the front of the magazine body. The only one that doesn't do this is a 10 round ProMag. I hate ProMag! A friend gave me this one but it's the only one that works consistently.

I was only shooting at 25 yds today, didn't feel like moving all my stuff back to the 100 yd bench. The Boss Lady wore by behind out last weekend and it still takes me a few days to recover.

Hoping to get out again this week. Weather is cooling down a bit.

That stubby ppu blue nose looks like a miniature .35 rem. and kills like it too.... It is said to not feed well in the sks and ak but feeds fine in a ruger.... I took my first deer in 1989 after four years of not hunting due to doing a stretch in uncle's yacht club with a mini 30 and that same cartridge, box labeled Hansen but headstamped ppu.....not quite dead in his tracks but he did not go far.....

That's funny!
It startled me more than anything else. One of those little buggers. They call them sweat bees around here. Not much bigger than a large house fly. Must have been a good season for them, they're everywhere and in large numbers.

Ray,

That's interesting. They feed perfectly in my SKS and my Stoner AR in 7.62r and are quite accurate. I'm going to use them for a hog hunt this year if I can get the mag issue resolved. I sure wish Magpul or Lancer would make magazines for the Rugers!!

It was like a Kamakazi attack. Whacked me on the lens just as I pulled the trigger. We've had a couple good blasting thunderstorms over the last couple of days and the swarms seam to be dissapating. Gonna head back out Friday if nothing else comes up.
Want to shoot the .30-40 Hi Wall some more. Still working on that load.

Jason,

You can do one of two things......take out the spring and stretch it a bit.
What has worked for me is to find a mag with a similar spring and take out the spring. Cut off about a third and fix it so you are lengthening the other spring. You can use wire of some sort to bind them together. You may lose a round or two of total capacity.

I've even found springs that fit inside the other spring for more tension.

You ought to see Uzi springs. On a 25 rounder it hard to push the bullets down after about the 10 round. The Israelis need to do whatever they have to do to kill the sand coons.----6

On one of my Mini-30 magazines, the hole in the front was about 1/16 inch too high and it would not feed at all. I used my wire welder to fill the hole and ground it flat and smooth inside and out with a Dremel. With my drill press I drilled a new hole and took some needle files to it to make it fit. After putting it back together, it actually worked.

I bought some 124 grain bullets of .313 diameter one time and loaded some up with H335. Those were the most accurate loads I ever fired from my Mini-30. I kept a few just in case I ever get an opportunity to take it deer hunting. Most rounds give a 6 inch grouping at 100 yards for me. Those handloads went 2 inches at 100 yards for a 5 shot group. I have often thought about getting a Har Bar or something like that for it. Someday I will do something about accurizing it a little. I just have not put it at the top of the "To Do" list yet. I need to get it out again and shoot it. I put it away because some of the ranges prohibit steel bullets, and the most available ammunition around has mild steel bullets. The typical brass and lead bullets are expensive around here.

Tapco makes regular (223) Mini-14 ones I've found pretty reliable....you might see if they list 762x39 ones.

Thanks Doc, I'll take a look.

Just got an email back from Ruger. They won't sell magazine parts but they will exchange the old ones for new ones.

Hopefully that will help, otherwise I'll try Sixgun's suggestion.
