Made some new grips- Finished and installed

Post by GunnyMack »

With Pitchy showing off his SBH and Jason showing off his new holster for his new again SBH Iand the the Bearcat post i decided I'd dress up my .44 special Single Six with some fancy wood.
I used Lacewood ( i believe quartersawn sycamore). The grain really shows up better on flat boards but i think you'll get the gist of it.

Dude, those are sharp! That .44 Spl. sounds like it would be a great little woods gun.

Very nice!

With the "flaming" you see in the grain, it reminds me of the Arctic Birch stocks often found on Swedish Mausers.

Gotta be my most favorite hunk of walnut.
I bought this as a blank for $190. I sat on it for about 6 months before I decided what to do with it. It's now probably the fanciest stock ever made for a 77/22. (This was the 2nd stock I made. )

Nice grain and pattern on both of them. Todd
30/30 Winchester: Not accurate enough fer varmints, barely adequate for small deer; BUT In a 10" to 14" barrelled pistol; is good for moose/elk to 200 yards; ground squirrels to 300 metres

Your talented Gunny.........sycamore? I always thought sycamore is pretty much grainless.....we have lots of it around here and my dad told me the only thing it was good for was for making peg legs because they wouldn't split....dunno. I was working with some Osage Orange wood today and I took the charm off of a brand new $45 blade on my table saw. Hardest wood I ever saw. Did you ever work with holly wood? Looks just like ivory. I have a few 16"-20" diameter ones I planted 45 years ago......cut some big branches off a couple of years ago for little nick knack work.

I got a kick out of your single six in 44 Spl. That was a first for me and because I'm addicted to the 44 Spl. I'm going to have to confiscate it. Plus, I'm older than you so that gives me the right.----6

Six I have used some orange and it is hard but IPE from South America is even worse! You can actually tap IPE for threads! I've done it many time. IPE will eat saw blades, drill bits and most of the time a nail gun will not send a nail through without bending the nail. IPE is so dense it sinks!
As for holly no I've not had any to play with.
The lace wood as I've been told is Australia sycamore, quarter sawn shows the ray fleck as opposed to flat sawn.

Since you have a single six 32 mag just send it down to John Gallagher, tell him I sent you and he will "fix" it for ya! I really need
call him to catch up!

Single Six in .44 Spl? Have we discussed this here somewhere? If so I missed it.

I put some pics on the Bearcat listing.
Long story short it's a .32 single six I opened the frame on, made new 5 shot cyclinder with 4&5/8" bbl.

original to the gun? old model? If so, that's the rarest of the brass framed Rugers. I've never seen an original.---6

New hammer from GunParts showed up in the mail today. I had altered the spur on original by reshaping it and adding a wide pad like on a SBH.I had done this 25 years ago, silver soldering it in place. As I was fitting & shaping the grips I thumbed it back and pulled the trigger and the spur went across the shop.
Anyhow, here are the grips installed.
Oh and I also fattened the butt end of the panels, never liked how skinny the factory panels are.
