100 years of the Royal Air Force

Post by perry owens »

Went to the RAF centenary celebrations in London today. Saw the flypast of 100 aircraft over Buckingham Palace.

I envy you Perry, I had to watch it on the news....
A while back I had the pleasure of fixing a Winchester 03 that once belonged to a WW1 Royal Flying Corps pilot that carried it in the cockpit in case his Lewis gun jammed, that was just before the RAF was formed.
If more men loved and cherished their wives as much as I love bacon the world would be a much better place.

As I've become older and more time to think, I have become enamored with WW2 and the equipment they used. Those fighter aircraft were baaaddd. I hear 350-400+ mph. There is this rich guy about 15 miles down the road (he died a few years back) .with his own airport...New Garden Airport......Alexis DuPont of the wealthy family....... who had several of these planes......(I'm thinking P-51's) and every year he had an air show with his buddies. Very cool and those babies were LOUD.

From what I've read and seen on the Military History Channel, your Spitfires gave the Nazi's hell. Very sad how so many British airman from the Lancaster bombers lost their lives.---6

I have a lot of admiration and respect for those who flew in WWII. Those planes ranged from not very good to amazingly well designed. The P39 Air Cobra changed balance significantly as it fired the nose cannon. There were others with design flaws. Then there were a few designs which were easy to fly and forgiving of many pilot errors. The B17, the P51, the Spitfire, the Me109, and several others were among those which were amazingly well designed.

Really cool. Love the sound of a V12 and a radial engine.

Had the pleasure of sitting in the cockpit of Fifi , the world's only flying B29 when I visited the confederate airforce museem in Texas. Also saw sentimental journey the B17G at an airshow in Virginia in 1997 with my family as a kid. It was all very special to me. I still build 1/48 models of them, a Lancaster is next on my list!
