way of the dodo.....

Post by Ray »

almost simultaneously, while the firearms press were still buzzing flatteries and consumers were buying all that they could produce, buffalo bullet co. of swaged lead muzzleloading conicals and u.s.f.a. of colt replicas assembled under the historic blue dome in hartford ct. mysteriously vanished with no apologies or explanations.....

does anyone here know the hows and whys ?

I head USFA got bought out by another company, but never found out if it was true or not. They sure made some nice pistols tho. Todd/3leg

I recently asked someone in the "industry", so to speak. He said that the USFA outfit was never actually a serious entrepreneurial endeavor despite its popularity and initial success. Basically just a rich heir who had been to tool and die class and loved single actions. The guy got bored and moved on to some other pricy hobby to amuse himself in an attempt to keep the golden straw out of his nose.

As for buffalo bullets, the guy said the doors to the original California plant were closed by the powers due to typical left coast fear of lead contamination. At each and every kerchunk of the machines there is lead dust emitted and it quickly settles and accumulates. Multiple lawsuits soon appeared.

The delays at the new location in Nevada are said to be caused by similar bureaucratic hurdles and hoops of fire.

USFA made some nice guns. I've handled quite a few and the fit and finish was better than the third gen. Colts. The problem came when the USFA guns were priced at about what a Colt cost and consumers went with the name.---6

Kinda funny that this question would come up now. Ian of the Forgotten Weapons youtube channel posted a video on just what happened to USFA late last week.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X9bULArrKs4

Short answer according to Ian is they sold the SAA tools and or tooling to build a spectacularly unreliable and unsafe polymer .22 pistol expecting to make enough money to buy the tooling and tools back.

Ian also posted a follow up video of shooting the example he shows in the first video. Think .22 autoloading pistol that is the exact opposite of there SAA's in terms of desirability.

See Standard Manufacturing http://www.stdgun.com/single-action-revolver-1/ for the new, IMO better than USFA or Colt, SSA.

That color case hardened 1911 on their site is beautiful. If I had that much money available to spend, I would love to get one. That in a nicely tooled holster from nothing low quality would be great to have on your belt.

I sold their guns. I got them through their distributor, a guy I knew before he signed on with them. That was his take. Buy the time they got to the plastic 22 Donnelly had pretty much lost interest.

As for the new Standard Manufacturing SAA's. I don't know this for a fact but I bet you they are made on the USFA equipment. The color-case looks the same as the USFA which was done by Turnbull and the boxes they ship in look to be the same as the USFA boxes I got.

Or one of their Tom Threepersons holsters would look right with a beautifully color case hardened gun. For something that is just plain, lesser holsters are often just fine.
