reprofile octagonal rossi 92 barrel
I was at a local barrel maker the other day and a conversation developed on my rossi 92 357 stainless which with 24" stainless is a front heavy little beast. Being that I like the 24" barrel length he suggested reprofiling half the barrel round( I guess like some 1894 are) to make it less front heavy. Obviously have to redo front site and new dovetail for the mag tube. I wasn't overly serious about the idea, it was more just a conversation that developed . But it got me thinking anyhow. Any idea of the benefits, problems or even how much weight could be reduced ?
Re: reprofile octagonal rossi 92 barrel
I like a little front barrel heavy, slows the shaking down, eases on recoil lift. Of course it slows down the quickness of snap shooting, barrel swing. All this is of course that the rifle is not to heavy in the first place. IMHO
To answer your question: a little pencil and paper time, you could figure how much weight you would shave off. Steel weighs about 0.283 pounds per cubic inch. Thanks google

Re: reprofile octagonal rossi 92 barrel
Mick, if I were going to a half-round barrel I'd be tempted to have the magazine cut back to a three-quarter or half-magazine. I happen to really like this easy-swinging configuration, but you do give up capacity.
Re: reprofile octagonal rossi 92 barrel
Bill, thanks that's another suggestion he made too. I'm not sure where I am headed with this or if I will even follow through but its interesting to hear what more experienced folks do to their lever actions.
Bronco I am still working on that math. I got the formula for volume of an octagonal solid. Does anyone know the muzzle diameter of a typical round barrel 357?

.
I can't help with your octagon bbl, but can tell you that I shortened the magazine on my .357 Rossi M92 from full-length to a button mag, with only the forward 3/8" of the magazine tube (basically, the magazine end cap) protruding from the forend.
I removed the forend's barrel band & installed/inletted a Model 1892 forend cap ( I had to slim down the wood there & refinish it) that retained a special magazine end cap that had a small protruding ledge on it, and also installed the proper FE tenon into a female dovetail I hand cut into the barrel bottom (after MUCH measuring).
The conversion made the carbine handle much better/lightly - and I didn't mind the reduced magazine capacity (YMMV, there).

I like this option, myself. I doubt capacity would be reduced by more than two or three rounds, tops, and I do like the look of the short-mag, half-round-half-octagon barrel. Just reprofiling the barrel will cut a few ounces, but more noticeable than the weight loss will be the change in balance. No doubt it will shift rearwards a bit. This will liven up the handling for sure, but will it make a steady offhand hold less achievable than the heavier barrel? I don't know, but I somehow doubt it will hurt things overall.
Re: reprofile octagonal rossi 92 barrel
Personally I like octagonal. Being front heavy doesn't bother me. Heck, I've been thinking of having an octagonal barrel fitted to my Marlin GS.

Re: reprofile octagonal rossi 92 barrel
buy another barrel and have that one done as you mentioned, if you don't like it just put the old one back on, or find a beater and experiment with that one.

Re: reprofile octagonal rossi 92 barrel
Thanks, another good suggestion. I am thinking I might leave it at this stage. Get me a second shorter barrel carbine for carrying about.
Re: reprofile octagonal rossi 92 barrel
Maybe you could have your barrel fluted to reduce weight

Re: reprofile octagonal rossi 92 barrel
In the late 90's Rossi came out with their first rifle configured gun, a half round half octagon 24". Most were in 45lc. of the rossi rifles it is the only one that feels like a tapered octagon barrel Winchester 92 rifle.

Re: reprofile octagonal rossi 92 barrel
They only made them for about 2 or three year in the late 90's. they were imported by InterArms just before they went out of business, all 45lc. In the early 2000's EMF imported some color-cased in 357 mag.
