What do ya think it is. ( RR logging camp )

Post by Pitchy »

We went metal detecting today where during the logging days at the head of the line there was a logging town they say had 3,000 people in it.
Its said there were 8 saloons, a whore house, motel, general store a RR station and many wood houses.
This town is long gone as it was only there from 1895 to 1903, the only evidence it was there are holes where buildings sat ect....
This is what we found today, what do ya think the U shaped item is, looks like a door frame to me for maybe the water cover on a tender or fire door on a boiler.

My guess would be off a fire door on a boiler. I'd love to go metal detecting somewhere like that..... 8)

Thanks, I think it was a door frame also.
Look at that chunk of coal, locomotive coal I should go back just for that for my forge.
The glass electric pole insulator is nice too. 8)

That is really neat, bud. I love old stuff like that. We have a ton of it here too.
As you know, and we have discussed, there are two full size locomotives sitting in the woods from the old logging days here.

More plunder from the RR site today, had to quit as its 85 degrees out there.
I`m pretty sure I spotted where the three loco round house was and will check that out next time.

Lenn, do you ever find the site of the old "out house" our late friend MikeD used to find a lot of antique bottles and other interesting bits and bobs in the old cess pits.

Yes in fact we found a couple holes today I`m sure are out houses but didn`t detect anything but it might take some digging.
A buddy found a octagon shaft about three foot long, he was sure he found a rifle barrel but ended up being a pry bar.

Edit, I found a picture in a book of the three locos that were at this place but I better not post them because of copyrights.
There were two Shays and a 4x4-0.

Thanks Rusty and I think so too.

We found some neat stuff today between rains, the best being the wrench.
Ya have to realize this place is in the woods with no signs of anything unless ya know what your looking for.
I`m positive we found where the three loco round house was and verified finding the spikes in and to it.

Thats neat bud. Lots of stuff in that spot for sure. Strange what people leave behind, and how fast mother nature covers it up.
Last fall hunting on our lot I found a 52 Chevy. :D

Thanks Jay, I think we are done there lots of stuff to be found but nothing of any value.
This place had 2,000 people in it in 1895 and in four years basically vanished.
The main highway that runs just beside where are lays on where I believe the main part of town was, we are on the very end where the track ended and the RR camp was and still remains.
There were a 1,000 loggers in the area most in the saloon and the rest fighting to get in
We`ve known about this place all our lives but have now got around to checking it out, should of asked my Grandmother about it when I was in my teens as she died at the age of 103.
Now I`m covered with skeeter bites and poison ivy.

I should of been more clear, the logging RR tracks ended where we are digging at the time there was a whole town there but after they had all the big timber logged off the town slowly vanished.

Oh I got you. We have some places like that too. There was a town called Holeb, about twenty miles back in the woods from Jackman. It was used by the railroad to support logging. Strangely, many of the houses still stand, and are used as camps now. Kind of weird. There is actually a makeshift airstrip too.

Do you know if those old bolts and such are wrought iron? There's folks out there looking for the same and it's not that easy to come by anymore. Funny how folks cotton to the old stuff now days. Theoretically modern steel is much superior, but some folks like to play with forging the old wrought iron into various items.

Pretty sure the bolts ect.. are made from steel, like that flat piece that`s folded over on its self wrought iron wouldn`t bend like that.

A close up of the can, I`ve never seen a can like it with a square cap .

Image

Also in the picture that shows where the track went in the woods to the round house , ya see the narrow cut to the left that's where the single track went then widened out and split into three tracks at the round house which is where the trees start.
Where I`m standing is where the main line would of been and about 100 yards further went in the woods and ended at that time.
Later they tore up the narrow gauge and put wide gauge in that extended to the next town which is still there but all track is gone now and its a bicycle trail.

I'm just waiting for the day when our buddy Pitchy finds one of these... :!:

Old Loco (Small).jpeg

That would be so cool!

But it might require some help digging it out...

So we'd need to plan for a Leverguns Road Trip?!?!
