At the risk of being a pedantic bore, that'd be pattern welded steel. And yes, he DOES appear to be having fun with it. Here's a video on the search to replicate "Wootz Damascus Steel" which many consider to be the "true Damascus", for reasons related in the video.

There are a lot of fascinating videos on YouTube about "Damascus Steel", the vast majority of which are in the realm of pattern welding. Whether it's the original Wootz variety or the more modern pattern welding, the patterns which are part and parcel of the process are fascinating. Have you seen any of the "damascus from cable" variety? Then there's also the "damascus from a chainsaw chain" or "from a motorcycle chain" and so on and so forth.

Yeah....."Damascus" does seem to be a term that has been s-t-r-e-t-c-h-e-d quite a bit these days....

If it was a type of wine, there would be trademark, marketing, and copyright suits galore....!

Still looks fun.

I'd be interested in seeing if that blade is really all that sharp like the real Damascus blades I've seen. Stainless steel never really impressed me as a great knife material if you want something that's sharp and stays sharp.

My favorite TV show is "Forged in Fire". It is fun and informative to watch. Moving steel around to create something, and being knowledgeable on how to heat and quench it to make a blade useful is quite a skill.

My wife thinks Doug Marcaida is the most fun to watch. He smiles as he says "it will kill"! PillHer finds that to be funny. I like seeing the mix of the smiths. You can find a lot to enjoy watching with the mix of personalities.
