Experience with Poly Choke gunsmithing?

Post by 44shooter »

Does anyone here have experience installing a Poly Choke? Not the new ones that use your choke tube threads but the original design. I bought one one EBay. It came with a sticker marked 732 which I think means .732 inch inside diameter. It has a short threaded tube with it that threads into the choke. I assume the tube is fixed to the barrel some way and the choke screwed on to it. Both the barrels I'm interested in choking seem too small for this setup. I don't think the sleeve can be made to go in either barrel or the barrel turn to go in the sleeve. Are there different diameters to accommodate variances in bore size and or barel diameter? I know I can get barrels threaded for tubes, but the convenience of adjustable choke appeals to me

I've never installed one but I'd guess those were silver soldered on. You MIGHT be able to install one with RED loctite but I'm not sure.
OD of barrel needs to be turned down to fit inside polychoke.

If it were me I'd find a for real gunsmith that can do the work for you. You'll only have to send the barrel and choke. Postage on that shouldn't be too bad. The first shotgun I ever had was a Mossberg 500 with a Polychoke. It worked for everything. When I was 11 years old I shot a 19 out of 25 on the trap range with it once. One of those I should have kept.

The most obvious thing is that the choke is installed absolutely straight, I had a Stevens 58 with an adjustable choke that the dealer had installed crooked.
It was hard to see just how crooked it was but at 25 yds patterns were low and right but worst of all, slugs made neat clover leaf groups but again very low and about 16" right.
The dealer had also fixed the choke with a touch of weld to make sure it wouldn't come off as the barrel was less than the UK legal 24" without the choke.
The gun is now deactivated and for sale to unlicenced Brit gun collectors

The Polychokes I've removed had very fine threads on the barrel plus were soldered. You need a gunsmith who can single point those threads.

Your description sorta sounds like you bought a screw in choke for a Cutts Compensator or similar device. What is your shotgun? I may have a barrel with a Polychoke already installed.

It's definately a real Poly Choke brand. I was thinking of putting it on my dad's old Iver Johnson Champion that I'm reburbishing. The original barrel had the choke cut off long ago. I just shortened it further. I didn't mention that the bore is not even close to being centered in the barrel. I know the choke has to line up with the bore so I'm not sure if that barrel would work.

Another candidate is a long ago cut off second barrel for my late granddaddy's Remington 58.

Oh, I'm not much of a bird hunter except maybe turkey. My shotguns are most likely used for squirrels, rabbit, turkey, maybe deer, defense, or pest elimation in a pinch. So I tend to prefer shorter barrels, especially if I'm modifying them.
