Sturpid question

Post by JNG »

My son took 2 deer with my 357 Max, Next sat. I am going to hunt with my Sharps 45-70. I only have GT 520 grain slugs. I was planning a bison hunt,
but I got hurt very bad and could not go. Is a 520 grain to much for white-tail. Or should I get a lighter bullet?
The Deer here range from 150lbs for does to ~200 for bucks. PS. I'm dead nuts at 150 yards with the round.
Would I ruin meat?

Thanks,
Joe

Too much? Not really -- but more than needed, for sure! Perfect if you happen to have a dozen deer standing shoulder-to-shoulder, though...

A .45 caliber hole is a .45 caliber hole . Just don't line up more Deer than you have tags for.

They'll definitely work. I've taken a few elk with 325 grain. Happy hunting.

I agree with the others. Way more lead than you need but you won't damage any more meat. Actually your rounds may be less destructive than say 300 grain jhp. Go for it since you have them and are sighted it for them.

Heavy & slow. Less meat lost. Complete penetration. Good blood trail if not DRT. Go and enjoy.

That's what I was thinking..
30/30 Winchester: Not accurate enough fer varmints, barely adequate for small deer; BUT In a 10" to 14" barrelled pistol; is good for moose/elk to 200 yards; ground squirrels to 300 metres

250 Savage... its what the 223 wishes it could be...!

I was thinking way, way back to the pic of Scott T's deer with that big 500+ grain from Big Nosed Kate. It sure ruined a lot of meat, IIRC.

I've always heard that with a .45-70 you could eat right up to the hole. Less bloodshot meat with lower velocity.

Thanks for your answers. As for tags, I do not need them as a land owner in Ohio hunting on my land. I can get 3 to 6, but only 1 buck.
I will let you know how it went.

With a hardcast, or non-expanding solid.

Well, I only saw a Doe on top of the north hill (my land is in a saddle with the pond in the middle). I did not take a shot, did not like the setup.
I could not hunt Sunday as I missed Church on Sat. A friend went there and was on his way home by 0900. Good for him, A doe makes great meat.
Black power season is around 1St week of Jan. We shall see how it goes.
