44 treated Coyote

Post by EdinCT »

I was hunting a few miles from home this am and was told by one of the men who work the farm that there appeared to be a lot of coyotes this year. I had just sat down and saw this guy running along about 60 yards out. I tried to stop him by lip squeaking but he just kept loping along so I put the scope on his front end and shot. He was knocked over but got up and ran about 50 yards out of sight. I heard him kiyi once and all was quiet. I sat around 3 more hrs hoping for a deer with no luck, and then went to see about finding him. He had died against a stone wall just out of my sight. They can be tough!! He took a 240 gr Speer deep curl from my 1894 CB Limited at 1800 fps through the lungs.

Way to go, Ed !

My bud & I (we sit back-to-back) have been predator calling these past several years, but have only had Red Fox respond so far - although we regularly hear 'yotes howling @ the moon.

I guess they're smarter than Reynard..... :(

Not your stereotypic 'coyote rifle', but it did the job...!

Pete44 they are tough to call but I have got a few and do much better from a tree stand and different calls than rabbit in distress. Fox pro's red squirrel and woodpecker have brought them in. Yours may be educated to your calls.
The 44 isn't ideal but 4-5 have fallen to it. Like Ollogger I use what's at hand. I will say the 22mag and 32-20 have always killed faster but I sure can't make sense of it.

Now THAT'S a "good" coyote!

If you get another one and treat it right in the field -- there's always "this option":

Thanks, Ed -you're most likely right.

I'll try them the next time I get out (whenever that is  )

I even have woodpecker/etc calls (doh)

Good work!
Saw one yesterday from my stand. He was a ways out and running through the trees. Couldn't get on him.
Glad you got yours!

That was not a coyote...that was me running to hide my guns because I knew you were in the area. :D ---6

I typically use a .30-30 on the ones I find trespassing at my place. Sierra 125HPs @ ~2500fps don't take more than one application. I tend to keep my 150FPs for deer, but they also make for good coyote medicine.
