Took the Marlin Cowboy out for a spin, sand bag at 100 yards shooting 300 grain jacketed hollow points over 42 grains of H 4198.
Happy with the results.

That's a dead whitetail, easy, Pitch. I had one of those after they first came out, and one in .38-55 too. Boy they were accurate rifles with good handloads.

Thanks pard, I am pretty happy with the group seeing the front sight is a blur in the rear sight, the days of shooting tight groups with open sights is about over.

Hard to beat 4198 in a straight case... especially when getting launched from a handsome rifle !
A peep or tang sight will sure clear up them blurry fronts. Near all my rifles have some sort of hole type on the rear.

Thanks, peeps don`t work for me the closer the sight to my eye the blurrier it is, I can`t even make out the circle otherwise I`d use one.

You are not supposed to be able to see the peep clearly, just look through it and concentrate on the front sight and the target.
A diopter on your shooting glasses will clear up those open sights and make small groups easy again.

I made a pair of those glasses and they do work.

PhotoSuckit ate my picture of it, but I put a Lyman Globe front and Taurus (Marbles clone) rear on my 1895 Cowboy, and it sure beats the factory sights...!

Thanks for the info, I don`t shoot that much anymore and don`t deer hunt so it really doesn`t matter just fun to get out and shoot.

I agree ! But it is still fun to get nice groups.
A ghost ring is just like your anchor point when shooting a bow. Having your eye in the same place every time is very important.
Your eye will find the center because the greatest amount of light is there and that is the point that is the most accurate.
No need to see the ring.

Pitchy, Nice rifle and good shootin'. I love those 45-70 lever rifles, in fact I love just about any 45-70 rifle. I have a couple myself, both 1886 models.
wolfdog, I haven't seen a rear leaf sight like that before. The only problem I would see is that the peep is too far from the eye to be of much advantage. A peep only works well if it is close to the eye. At least that is the way it is in my aging eye situation.
