duh... I already have one!
Fellas -
I've wanted a "bulldog" type revolver for a long time. Not enough to run out and get one, but I've been patiently waiting for decades for the right buy to fall in my lap, since I'm not in a hurry. What do I define as a "bulldog"? A large-caliber, short-barreled revolver. Think "belly gun" updated. The Charter Arms series by that name had an appeal, especially due to the price point, but I've had iffy experience with their products. Still, the thought intrigued me...
Then I saw this - the new Ruger GP100 - in .44 Special. I love Ruger's. American-made, strong, reasonably-priced. Here's a picture of one:
3 inch barrel, so at the edge of "bulldog" territory. Stainless steel with great sights. 5-shot .44 Special. It's also a bit bigger than one would normally consider, but it is a beauty. One of my local stores had one in stock, and I got to hold it, lusting all the time.
Problem is, I don't "need" it. I know - "need" is not necessarily the determining factor for any of us. But with the job elimination late last year, I've had to reconsider purchases. Even with the extension, this one should wait.
Duh, then I remembered that technically, I already own a "bulldog" type revolver - and it is a 6 shot - and in a larger caliber (.45 Colt). The only thing it is not is a double-action; it is a single action. It is also more compact than the GP100.
It is an Uberti "Cattleman Sabre".
You know what? I feel just fine now!

Re: duh... I already have one!
I saw a report on the new Ruger and surely would get one. But I guess I'm just not quite comfortable with 5 shot revolvers. I have two, a 38 Special and a 357 Mag. and there's something about 5 shooters that I don't care for. Both my 5 shooters are accurate, and easy to shoot, and my 2" 38 fits my pocket fine, but I kinda feel "it's over as soon as it starts". Can't explain very well and I'm sure it's just me (and my SD/HD arms are multi shot pistols) I just want at least 6 shots outta my revolvers...

Me too on that last comment.
As for the 1st comment... I want more than 3!!! (see Jay's picture)
No, Jay; you're still not quite right...
Go out and buy something else -- preferably something that I'm selling -- and then you'll be OK.
Sounds like you need a new toy!

At interpersonal crisis range, a .45 Colt caliber pistol should work well. I hope I never have to go beyond theory on this, but I wouldn't hesitate to defend my life or the lives of others should It happen.

Vastly more "cool factor" with the Uberti than with the Ruger. Will do the job just as well.

Well, one thing for sure.....you will never be able to wear it out. Double action is an absolute necessity for me. I want to be able to pull and shoot and not have to think about thumbing back the hammer.
In my 2" model 29 Smith model 29 fixed sight Tunnel Rat, I load 200 gr. bullets at 1,000. Very easy to control in fast double action.-----6
You ought to try this with full house loads...jumps out of your hand.....only a handful of these fixed sight 629's were made. A Smith rep brought it down from the factory to my buddies gunshop and told him, "this is for the crazy buddy of yours"---6

Well... By my figuring, I "saved" money by not getting the Ruger, so I ended up adding another 3 ladies to the sorority... I'll post on that one when it comes in. Meanwhile, a teaser...
"Captain Schaeffer"
Re: duh... I already have one!
Be careful Jay -- we can tease back!!!
How's this?!?!?! That is an ORIGINAL "Captain Shaeffer" 1851 Navy that RIA sold for a measly $9,200... And that was over 7 years ago...
Hope yours looks just as good!

Re: duh... I already have one!
I think I really NEED one as well. But given the other purchase and the job situation, I'll need to be patient. I will have to live vicariously through you!Les Staley wrote: ↑Mon Mar 27, 2017 8:25 pm I gotta quit reading everything you "Enabelers" write.. Looking forward to the range report!
Re: duh... I already have one!
Guns like that have a history of not being produced long and going up in value. S&W, Taurus and Rossi have all produced big bore, 5 shot, short barreled revolvers on 357 frames. Not many people buy them, they get discontinued, demand goes up

I've got a bit of a fetish for the English BullDogs. I have several originals.
So, awhile back I built this one using 45lc SAA parts

Re: duh... I already have one!
That Ruger is a nice pistol. My shooting buddy has one and he knows I'm a 44 SP nut so we have taken it out several times. Honestly I can't say we have found it's sweet spot yet as far as a load but we are getting there. I did pin gauge the throats and found them to be very uniform at just a tad over .432. Should do well with 431 cast but we haven't found the load yet. When I first saw it, I thought it would be heavy as my brain was thinking Redhawk which, at first glance it appears to be a mini version of. Actual and in hand, it is lighter than my 3" 624 so not too heavy at all. My friend was glad it wasn't too light as his hands can't take a beating anymore. The grip shape handles recoil very well.

Re: duh... I already have one!
Back in 93 I put together a Single Six (.32 frame) as a 5 shot 44 special. John Gallagher was doing conversions while we were in gummsmiff skool together. Few minor frame alterations, we made new cylinder, barrel, hand. It turned into the perfect fishing vest gun!

Re: duh... I already have one!
Hey Six,
I do love the old victorian style of these guns and I do shoot them. The 44's are straight bored through for heal type bullets and will actually chamber a 44mag or 44spec case. Scary huh!!!
What I do is use 44 spec. loaded with black powder then I seat a .457 round ball. You light one off and it belches fire and brimstone and it looks like your hand just blew up!!! Whata hoot.
As for the 32 and 38's I got with KirkD and he helped me work up some smokeless loads that replicate BP pressure curves.

There is a Bulldog in the Custer museum in Gerryowen Mt. (Just down I90 from the Battlefield, you can see the pine trees on the ridge at the battle site from there). Custer was supposed to have been carrying one at the time, but never found. on the newer gun, found one to fondle at Cabelas yesterday, liked it. Did buy 100 new 44 special cases and will have some ready to run thru it when it gets here (tomorrow according to USPS tracking).
