Big bore airguns

Post by GunnyMack »

For a while now I have been toying with the idea of big bore airguns.
I have seen videos of pig/deer hunts. Are they really that effective?
Anyone here have any experience with big bore air guns?

Not I but Lewis and Clark used one extensively on their expedition. Seems I recall them killing an elk with it.

At least one maker claims right at 1000 fps with a 255 gr. projectile. That's .45 Colt country and, yes, that's effective.

In recent years Missouri renamed ML season Alternative Methods season to include air guns as well as crossbows, hand guns and atlatls.

Predator Xtreme magazine has a very detailed monthly column devoted to air guns -- it has covered the newest stuff, as well as the oldest going back to the one carried by Lewis & Clark (no kidding! True story!).

You might be able to search online for some of the articles, and quite a number of makers advertise their guns in there too -- .25, .30 and up to .50 cal too! Used for BIG game!

The author -- Jim Chapman -- really knows his stuff, and while I don't use anything larger than a single-pump .177, I'm always impressed with what he writes about.

And boy -- those newer big bore airguns really have some power!!!

Here's a link to info about Jim, and that may point you to even more info...

Awhile back, I drilled a coon on the back porch with a Crossman 760 pump up. Supposedly 700fps with 10 pumps. Fairly tame compared to what's available today (I bought this one about 1965...still works great). That coon was DRT with a BB deep in his skull....

All the "new" guns are good in their own right... but I simply don't understand why no one will produce a modern Girondi...

Actually, I think they do -- the larger ones that I've read about have large permanent tanks (as part of the buttstock or forearm) and they are refilled by Certified Scuba tanks! (More due to the high air pressure, rather than the air quality -- as airgun shooters aren't breathing it...)

(Although a helium mixture might help with my high-ball duck call... )

The one in those links doesn't look like what I thought I remembered . I remember some kind of air rifle thing at Monticello that had a sphere thing hanging from the underside .

Not surprised. That is probably a French airgun, and Jefferson was definitely a Francophile. Single shot with ball tank. The Lewis & Clark gun was a repeater.

Here are some Ball Resevoir airguns from the Roanoke show:

This guy is near me here in Fla. He has a lot of hunting videos, most with air rifles.
Check out other videos by him as well.

It's all a real fine, but real expensive hobby.
In terms of a stealth rifle for "whatever", I'm laying in a supply of CB shorts, and longs...They are effective on just about anything with a head shot, and quieter than a high power air rifle. Especially, if we get our Hearing Protection Act underway....

Blaine I also keep CBs on hand for quiet dispatching but I can remember a possum that was LUCKY once! Shot it right between the eyes with a CB short- it hit the skull and deflected never penetrating it richoeted off. Then I put a couple in the pump house to finish it.
If you haven't tried the Agulia SSS yet they use a 60 grain pill, great for body shooting!

I use these, yes they are expensive but I only use them for that vermin that likes to mark their territory. Other pest just get the plain lead pellets.
