Good Old Al....an acquired taste to be enjoyed slowly...

Meet "The Polka Dots" for high school kids, we made a TON of money around Columbus, Ohio's German Village. Lots of weddings, and stuff, too. We even had a TV show on a 1/2 Watt Zanesville Station. That lasted about two weeks....

I have an accordion like that. Can't play it, but it was bequeathed to me in an attempt to solidify my place in US Culture...

6 years of Spanish in grade school, 2 years of Latin, then 2 of German in High School, then 3 years of Spanish in college... and I still work a word or two of German into most sentences when I'm speaking Spanish... sure confuses listeners... I get a LOT of "Que?" as a response! :P

Only really used my German once. The USAF was training German pilots in the Phantom. One was on the taxiway when for some reason the drogue chute for the main chute fired off and went through the canopy. The German pilot was in the rear seat with an instructor up front.

The instructor completely shut down the aircraft right there and then. Didn't even call it in to the control tower, but it didn't take long for the Phantom behind him to.

The German pilot forgot every bit of English he ever knew. Since I "spoke" German I was elected to try and keep him from opening the canopy. The egress folks didn't know what that would do so they told everyone to stay put and got a hold of Martin Baker (ejection seat manufacturer).

Long story short, we got the pilot out first, then closely following the instruction relay via radio, from a phone call with the tech rep we very, very, very slowly managed to get the German pilot out.

His English did come back to him somewhere along the way. But I wonder what ever happened to him.

 In Panama, after a few adult beverages, I'd start mixing in a little Korean with my Spanish....(I really loved Panama...great people...I'd drive twenty miles north of Panama City, stop at an outside bodega, buy a round of cervesa, and I had an instant family for the evening....)
