Grandpa...............sigh.............
I got a call the other day from a cousin who is moving to Florida in a few months. He had another of our grandpa's guns that he didn't want to take with him so he wanted to give it to me. It's a mode 10 Remington pump shotgun made around 1912. It has two eras of duct tape on the stock and a piece of Bakelite for a but pad. Now I have a set of four of Grandpa's guns, all lovingly inscribed on the side with an electric pencil of his social security number.

I have a similarly engraved Grandpa pistol, a bring back. Must have been having a sale on electric pencils

They thought that it would discourage theft. They were right.

Yeah several of my Dads guns have his ss# engraved on them...doesn't add much to the collector value. AARRRG.
a Pennsylvanian who has been accused of clinging to my religion and my guns......Good assessment skills.
Re: Grandpa...............sigh.............
Looked at a Remington 141 in Washington state that had the SS# inscribed the same way. Still its nice to have family history. I have a friend that hunts with a model 10 20 ga. Its a sweet gun!
Re: Grandpa...............sigh.............
#'s matching set, that's neat.
I would figure that to be pretty special, especially to see it the way he would have used it.. duct tape and all. Any pics?

"Back When" the old folk mostly didn't buy and sell a lot. They saved their pennies, got their shooter, and it lasted them a lifetime.

I think you're wasting your time rolling your eyes at your Grandpa.
Chances are he wouldn't have cared what you think about how he marked or repaired his guns, and he probably would have told you so.

Oh my. Electric pencils. I was given my F.I.L.'s guns. All of them etched with his last name.
