And todays Darwin Award goes to........

Post by jnyork »

TAMPA, Fla. - Police say a Florida man asking if a bulletproof vest "still worked" was fatally shot by his cousin.

A Tampa police report says Joaquin Mendez, 23, put on the vest late Saturday and "wondered aloud whether it still worked."

Police say his cousin, Alexandro Garibaldi, 24, pulled out a gun and responded, "Let's see."

Officers found Mendez outside the house with a gunshot wound in his chest. Mendez died at a hospital.

According to the report, Garibaldi initially told officers he found his wounded cousin after hearing a gunshot. However, police say a witness described Garibaldi shooting Mendez.

Police say the vest was found inside the house with a gunshot.

Garibaldi was held Sunday without bond on a manslaughter charge. Hillsborough County jail records didn't show whether he had an attorney.

Just a guess, but I suspect alcohol or drugs were involved.

Other than the Darwinian inevitability of something bad happening to that kind of numbskull, one does have to wonder what he was shot with, and why the vest actually didn't work.... :?

Since his buddy just pulled out his pistol, could be 380 or 9. Parabellums are known for penetration, and usually a Level 2A vest is recommended. Level 2 will stop a 45 ACP.
Depending on the age of the vest, there could be time degradation too, and was no longer up to snuff. -Brian

I read a related article and (by my reading) the guy didn't ask to be shot, his crazy azz cousin just drew and fired.

Not a Darwin award nominee, just some unlucky bastid who did didn't know that his cousin is bat-shidt crazy.

Government office attracts the power-mad, yet it's people who just want to be left alone to live life on their own terms who are considered dangerous.

History teaches that it's a small window in which people can fight back before it is too dangerous to fight back.

Not bullet proof vest (is there such a thing), but an old flak jacket. Heck those things were lucky to stop flying hunks of metal (I got the scar to prove it) much less bullets.

No word on drugs of booze yet.

Yep, they work real good as long as they hit the vest and/or plate depending on the round used. Hit you anywhere else and it's going to leave more than a mark. Here tell bad guys have figured out to shoot above or below the vests these days.
