Remington 788......in 300 Blackout

My son wants to rebarrel the 788 he has from 223 Rem 8th 300 Blk, as the twist rate won't stabilize the heavier bullets he wants to use in 223, but he's kind of like to keep and use the gun.

Anyone know of a good place to find or have made 788 barrels...?

Can the existing barrel not just be reamed out and re-rifled for .30-cal?

I do recall last year a guy at our gun range did the same thing, re-barreled his 788 to 300 BLK. He bought his barrel on GB used that came off of a 700 action. Came out great!

Send it to McGowan or Douglas and tell them you want the old barrel back .

Unless you plan on suppressing the 788 and using factory 220 grain bullets.....why bother. Any deer sized 30 caliber gun can be made to do the same thing with a 220 gr. Lyman and 6 grains of Unique.

I realize I'm a bit screwed up but I never could see the fascination of the 300 Blackout........unless your using the 220 grain bullets that travel under the speed of sound.....for specific suppressed uses in an AR that will still cycle the action. I've shot a fair amount of the 300 and to me it's just a "small 45-70" with terrible trajectory.

But.....as Sly says, "different strokes for different folks". ------6

You can do the same Sub sonic thing in a 308 with 14.5 grains of Trailboss and the Sierra 220 grainer for paper and the Outlaw State 220-225 grainers for deer . Actually the Sierra will work on deer as well but I'd hold out for head shots . Now with all that being said I do not advocate the sub sonic for deer much past 100 yards .

I think his reasons for this particular project are:

• > the gun is sort of a 'family heirloom' that he doesn't particularly want to sell
  > the gun will just sit on a shelf if left in 223, as he will get a more optimal 223 at some point
  > rechambering it in anything other than a 223 derivative means more cost, new magazines, etc.
  > he does like the 300 Blk potential for a suppressed coyote rifle, due to:
  • - excellent results with very short barrel, facilitating compactness even with suppressor
    - good accuracy IF you have an appropriately fast-twist barrel (versus similar 308 Win loadings)
