Mossberg 500 Tactical - HS410 Home Security

Post by 1894c »

I have been using a Remington 870 Police Magnum forever, but decided this year to get the "Mossberg 500 Tactical - HS410 Home Security" for fun. Never owned a .410 before, took it out to the gravel pit and busted a bunch of clay pigeons and assorted soda cans. Tried a bunch of different .410 SD shot-shells too (my range was limited to 25, 15, 10, and 3 yards).

After my initial testing I have come to two conclusions -- 1). I do not want to be on the receiving end of a 410 at 15 or less yards. 2). I really like the location of the safety on the Mossberg way better than the Remington...this has me thinking... :)

.410 may not be a great hunting cartridge for bigger animals or longer ranges (but it does require one to learn the discipline of good aiming and stalking), but for thwarting human predators bent on doing you harm, I think they would do nicely. The bad guy would have to be on one heck of a drug-induced rage to keep coming at you with a round of any .410 fodder in the face.

I still just might prefer the 20-gauge version though.

My first shotgun was a Mossy 500 .410. Still have it and have converted it into the "Perfect Jeep Gun".

But prior to that and her passing my mom kept it for "protection". Perfect for small framed older folks, young folks, and anyone who wants a great way to have fun.

Perfect for quail, dove and jacks. Light enough to carry all day without thinking about it, yet with slugs fairly formidable.

The newer .410 Mossbergs look pretty good except for that funky vertical foregrip.

I like keeping a .410 single shot in the truck for grouse. 3" #4 shot does a number on a gallon milk jug at 20-30 yards....I think if I was using a .410 pump for SD, it would have slugs in it....

.410s are fun... but I like Leverguns

Only thing I want to do to mine is ream the barrel out to .429 so I can shove a .444 into it in a pinch.

You have no idea just how many times I've kicked myself for not getting a Winnie or Marlin lever shotgun in .410

Had a 9410. It had some annoying issues. I like the Rossi much better.

Picked up a 500 Youth Bantam several years ago and bought an 18" cyl bore barrel and pistol grip for it. Currently have the 18" barrel on it loaded with .410 Critical Defense for home defense (just in case).

I was wondering about those. Is that the one with the smaller frame? I saw one somewhere that had a smaller frame than a 12ga Mod 500. seems like that would be a convenience for the purpose.

I have a 9mm keltek carbine for that duty, mo'better house gun methinks.

I've shot 410 in a Marlin 444 but the rifleing spins the shot into two nearly perfect circles with almost no shot in the center. good for ring-necks? nah

I'm thinking of exact the opposite. Cylinder bore .429 instead of .410. will open the pattern a little, but let me use a .444 instead of a 1/4 oz slug for up close thumping.

Yea, small frame, pretty much what the HS410 is, but the HS410 has a different barrel setup on it, the barrel won't fit my receiver, I think it might have something to do with a larger diameter barrel. The 18.5" cyl bore works for me. The stock is shorter too.
Check out the 500 Tactical .410, what I have is the same with a short 13" buttstock on it instead of the pistol grip.

load for load....shot size for shot size , the 410 shot has the same energy as a 10 guage.......there's just a lot less of em.----6

Copy that. It's a good idea

I agree that the 44mag has more potential than the the 41 . . .

keep going up and you can put the slug in the 12ga shot cup for easy sabot load.

but your plan in a small frame 410 would be ample for most... if the 410 handles the 444 pressures.
