Since it's Summer, and things are getting ripe (NOT my clothes )

How to choose a Watermelon..........

Everyday, people bang on watermelons, trying to pick the best one by sound/feel.

Here's the real dea,l on picking the sweetest Watermelon:

1) Make sure it has a prominent yellow spot.

This is where the melon sat on the ground, ripening.

No spot = premature pick = not ripe.


2) Look for "webbing" on the stem end.

The webbing is the brown, coarse web-looking material that's actually caused when bees pollinate the flower, scarring the membranes of the flower that later forms the fruit.

More pollination = more webbing = sweeter fruit.


3) Look for black hard globs seeping out.

The globs = sugar, not insects or rotting.

Gee, I remember when they used to plug them. But back then markets prided themselves on the quality of things like meat and produce. Today they sell mostly processed junk, are owned by huge corporations with employees who usually don't give a darned.

In a local farmer's market this would be the exact way to do it. In the big supermarkets, they are picked so green that it's hard to find a decent one anymore.....

That's great info on watermelons,now how do you determine a yellow meated watermelon? I haven't seen one of those in some 50 years!

OS - nice melons, but stick to the subject.

In high school, I unloaded watermelons for the local ice house and in addition to a small wage, the owner always dropped and broke open a big Black Diamond for us.

I've just about given up on fruit from a supermarket. I bought some grapes (grown in US), some plums, some nectarines andI bought some bananas, and I won't pay $5.00for a small watermelon. All the fruit was tasteless, not really sweet. There's a farmer's market in town, but I haven't seen any locally grown plums, nectarines, oranges, or of course bananas. Prunes are still fresh and sweet though...

I'm on a roll so far this summer on the watermelons. They have all been wonderfully sweet. I, too, look for the prominent yellow spot, then I go for the heaviest one I can find. Seems to be working.

Never could figure out how to tell if a watermelon is ripe. What I do now is while in the vicinity of the melons I look around for a black guy to ask. They ALWAYS know.-----6
