Early spring!

At least for central PA. We still had snow on the ground last year at this time.

It looks identical to the black rat snakes we get in the Midwest.

Unfortunately we see fewer of them the past 20 years or so, probably because we get lots of city folks moving into rural areas who kill every snake they see, "I thought it might be a copperhead..."

Copperheads never worried me all that much. Unless the cat decided to bring me one that was still moving....

My mom grew up on a farm in Virginia and she still killed every snake she could. Me, well I don't bother any unless they are copper heads or rattle snakes. I've only come across one of each of the poisonous snakes in my fifty years. I should pay more attention when I'm out in the summer in brushy areas. But I get lax because of seeing so few over the years. There were several dead snakes this past week around our place on the pavement. Happens every spring when they start coming out.

Actually the worst species of snakes are the two-legged ones....
The most important aspect of this signature line is that you don't realize it doesn't say anything significant until you are just about done reading it & then it is too late to stop reading it....

I have an almost 7' black snake like the pictured one in my shop. No rat problems!
