History of the tang sight?

Post by Ysabel Kid »

How long have tang sights been in use? I’m thinking they date back to the percussion era, and really came into their own with the cartridge long-range rifles like the Sharps, but I’m just guessing. I have a Marbles one on my Chaparral Arms “Winchester 1876â€

When visiting the Buffalo Bill Historic Center in Cody Wyoming a few years ago, in the firearms collection they had some rifles from the 1700's , maybe before, with what amounted to a peep sight or tang sight. Cant recall any details.

I have four different rifles with the Marbles sight and prefer them over the lyman as they have click adjustments and windage.

I think they actually used tang sights on crossbows.

It is an old idea.

I'd get the Marbles. Just sayin'...

The Marble's have windage adjustment, the Lyman don't.

The windage adjustment is something new for Marbles . The older ones didn't have that feature.

Here is a copy of a Swiss one from around 1830. I have seen them on flintlock long rifles. None of them fold down though.
