From one tech challenged curmudgeon to another
I HATE learning curves, specially when mine are straight up. Was all braced to go buy a $400 hand held GPS and add a $100 state chip to give me peace of mind while hunting. (Whose land are you on?). Are you lost? Who to call for permission?
Now I get an advertisement in the envelope with my Wyoming additional doe/fawn deer tags (one of which will undoubtedly be named Cecil, or Allawishus, or Fred) for an App for my I phone that does the same thing. Only $29.95...gotta get my grandson to help..sounds pretty good.

This is plagiarized from someone else, but I love it!
I was born a gun owner.
It wasn't a choice.
I didn't become one later in life.

Re: From one tech challenged curmudgeon to another
This would maybe suffice as long as you have a good, 4G cell signal. Not likely in the boondocks. Real GPSs have built in maps, and do not rely on continuous cell coverage to operate properly. Now, I use Google Maps on my phone, but it's iffy when you're out of range. I wonder if this app uses the internal phone storage chip (some are 32, or 64 gigs..) to keep the maps? This could work, I guess.....Les Staley wrote:I HATE learning curves, specially when mine are straight up. Re: From one tech challenged curmudgeon to another
My thing is riding the trails on our Polaris RZR every chance I get. I also own a small airplane that is about bare of instruments as legal. I also am highly tech and computer challenged. Someone showed me enough to get started with a Samsung Tab 2. That with the free Apt, "My tracks" works well and is far bigger to see than any other more expensive handheld GPS. I have several that I have set away and dont even use anymore.
I have recorded about 50 rides and another 5 or 6 flights that when I am near anyplace to get on line so I can use google earth I can look at my exact trail or tracks and bring it up and literally drive or fly down the trail at ground level on satellite. Scenery and all! It even shows the exact time and date, elevation changes, how fast and long the trip was etc. If you are out away from internet you can still follow your tracks back to your starting point! I know this is old news probably to most youngsters here and they probably are getting a kick out of a old poop just finding this out. I suppose the apt also works on a cell phone too. I don't even see how or why GPS`s are sold anymore. Once you have the Apt all it takes is pressing a icon to start recording. I haven't figured it out yet but I know you can also take a picture and have the exact spot you took it on show up when you review your route and you can also write notes on the spot wherever. I would have gave everything I owned if I could have went far back in time, the frontier days and had one of these to record people, trails etc. I see the newest Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 go`s for a $180s now. A good GPS is at least twice that and aint one part as good plus it does everything else too!
Also, unlike a GPS, once I have the satellite fix and start recording, I can put on the protection hard cover, even put it covered up in my glove box on the ATV and it STILL records accurately!

You might start here:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/deta ... s.mytracks
In reading this, it seems some people don't like the newer up dated App. I downloaded the one I have about one to two years ago and I am happy with it. Maybe it aint available now? It was free. Maybe there are better apts now?
Years ago I and the wife had to go back to California. We hit heavy rain and I pulled over to a filling station in a casino parking lot and was trying to figure out how to put on some wiper blades I just bought. I couldn't figure out how they went on and muttered to my wife, "I need a Jap kid!" As God my witness, I swear a young Japanese or Chinese guy showed up about 30 seconds later and put them on for me! I couldn't stop laughing and was trying to come up with some lame joke to cover myself!
