Nice Levergun Fallow Deer

Post by peter richards »

G'day folks,
I have been flat out for a while now & haven't had a chance to post. What do you all think of my fallow? He was taken with a Browning BLR in 30-06 in thick scrub at about 55 metres.

Very Nice....I did not know their coats were that dark...
A few years back one of my neighbors had a few on his little ranch, with much lighter coats...
Very nice trophy!

Rimfire, the Fallow deer have several different color phases, including snowy white. The ones around here look to be the size of a cat compared to this bigun here. Nice shooting!

There's a five star resteraunt near where I live that maintains a herd of Fallow for their venison dishes . Last time I went by the place they keep them , it seems to me all in that herd were of the white or light haired persuasion .

Deer, looks more like an Elk. How does that rack rate? i.e. average bigger than most. Todd/3leg

Please do tell, how do they taste? All I am used to is the whitetail and they can be gamey if not prepared and cleaned well.

Great deer, and a great rifle. It is so reassuring that another sprawling Commonwealth country likes and uses lever actions!!

Any resteraunt venison dishes I've ever had were fallow and they were all good . I remmember reading a John Wooters article a number of years ago and he claimed Axis and Fallow were top notch along with Blackbuck and Nilgai . Fallow is the only of those four I've ever had and I liked it . Personally I like Sika Deer more but they are closer to elk then deer .

Thanks, back a few years ago, a local hobby farmer had some fallow deer, and a few escaped, they seemed to be doing well living on my property. Might see how they taste............................. :?:
