No need to drag the forum down.

Post by AmBraCol »

It seems to be that time of year again. Some folks can't handle cabin fever or something. There is a simple method of dealing with idiots - walk away. It may be news to some folks, but you aren't called on to correct everyone else's opinions and ideas. There's no need to get into a brawl here. This is not THAT kind of forum. I'm not looking for apologies. I'm looking for repentance. As in - do it different. Walk away. It takes a man to ignore a whippersnapper blathering at him. Why drag yourself down to that level? WALK AWAY.

If you can't ignore a particular person's post - use the "Foe" function. And walk away. It's not that hard to do - if you're a man. Don't attempt to make this like the type of forum where folks act differently from this one - go to those forums instead.

And especially, don't hijack someone else's post just to prove that you're ruder than the other guy. I don't have that much time for internet, much less for policing the forum. Spending time whacking out posts quoting infantile personalities is not my choice of how to spend time on the forum. If it's gotta be done, it'll get done - but patience will eventually wear thin. Personally, I'd rather it not snap. Everyone here makes up the community, but the tiny percent that make me waste forum time changing dirty diapers? It is easy to rationalize how they wouldn't be missed much - if at all.

Moral to the story - Follow the simple rules of the forum. Thank you.

I'm not a big proponent of banning people, but once in a while I've seen people get shown the door for a week or month or whatever to think about the error of their ways, then they can come back. Sometimes it doesnt sink in....

Looks like James 1:27 to me. Of course the second part of the verse is where I struggle the most. Keeping one's self unspotted before the eyes of God is no simple undertaking. That would be where many decide "to walk with Him no more" and set up their own rules of conduct..

You missed something. Some folks apparently don't operate above the 12 year old bully on a primary school playground level. There are other forums on the 'net for that. :?

I've used the 'foe' thing on a couple of ocassions.

Once, I found a fellow to be generally offensive, and usually insulting, so didn't want to see anything he had to offer.

Then TPTB saw fit to ensure that his nonsense could not be blocked, and he used that as an opportunity to rub his disregard for others sensibilities in the faces of the membership because no one could, or would, stop him.

Now there is no choice but to simply ignore him.

Here's right from the phpBB info page:
Friends and Foes

What are my Friends and Foes lists?
You can use these lists to organise other members of the board. Members added to your friends list will be listed within your User Control Panel for quick access to see their online status and to send them private messages. Subject to template support, posts from these users may also be highlighted. If you add a user to your foes list, any posts they make will be hidden by default.

How can I add / remove users to my Friends or Foes list?
You can add users to your list in two ways. Within each user’s profile, there is a link to add them to either your Friend or Foe list. Alternatively, from your User Control Panel, you can directly add users by entering their member name. You may also remove users from your list using the same page.
That is the way it is supposed to work. If this function does NOT work, TPTB here at Leverguns Community have not monkeyed with it. Make sure you've got cookies enabled and if necessary clean out your cache or try a different browser.

It is supposed to hide all posts by that person. It goes a long way towards helping some folks ignore other folks and in turn convince the "foe" to back off as they get no rise from their mark and eventually (hopefully) will quit trying. Some folks seem to live off the spark they can generate in others. Using the "foe" button helps eliminate irritation from irritating people. I DON'T KNOW if it will hide quotes from the "foe" if someone else happens to quote the "foe's" comments. It CAN help some folks learn to "walk away" and not turn the whole forum into a battle ground.

Different opinions are fine. Who said anything different? It's the manner in which they are expressed. I call out folks "on my team" for not abiding by the simple rules of this forum. It ain't rocket science.
