Improvised Range Solutions
Thought I'd share this one: The larger medicine bottle shown holds about 80 .22lr, perfect for a day at the range. It's water resistant and easily portable. Perfect to just chuck in your bag and go.
Got any you'd like to share?

I like the parmesan cheese containers for 22's. Theres a flip top, and you can see whats in it. I use them for hardware also.
Only 80 rds of 22 for a day at the range?

For my tube-fed .22 lever & autoloading rifles, I make D.I.Y. speedloaders for virtualy no cost.
I cruise a few of the National chain coffee shops and/or fast food stores (McDonald's, Burger King, etc) and glom onto a handful of their free plastic drinking straws.
If I don't have any of those disposable foam earplugs on hand like I usually do, I might have to buy a boxful @ wallyworld ($1.88)
I compress one foam earplug into a long/narrow stick, via rolling it between two fingers, & seat it flush into one end of the straw.
I then fill the straw with .22RF cartridges.
I then compress another foam earplug & insert it halfway into the other/open end of the straw to retain the bullets until needed.
They're similar to these:

80 .22's?.........that's $300.00 worth of ammo!
"Oh bother", said Pooh, as he chambered another round.

"free plastic drinking straws."
Client owned one of those national franchises where you '"glom" free straws. They're really not free. Did you 'glom' some condiments & large quantities of 'free' napkins as well?
Beyond the principle of theft, the 'glomming' that hacked him the most off was the frequent taking every roll of toilet paper in the bathroom.
We estimated his franchise lost hundreds of dollars annually from 'glomming"

This is one of the best "improv" inventions of all time. I didn't invent it, I just modified it a bit to fit my needs.

+1. You can actually just walk into Walmart groceries department and BUY a big box of those same soda straws for next to nothing. Imagine that.2571 wrote:"free plastic drinking straws."

Re: Improvised Range Solutions
I'd probably go for something more durable for a tube loader, like a section of brake line or some K & S brass. Neat idea, I think I may steal it! The only thing I don't like about my 9422 is loading it

NO................. I always made a purchase, wherever.
And, while I'm certainly a senior, I'm not a "Sweet-N-Low Bandito".
2-3 straw speedloaders last me about a year, barring mishap.

Re: Improvised Range Solutions
they are made by Paul Huard, a really nice guy in California that shoots CLA, BPCR, and BPTR. I put the wood on mine, but he is the one that makes them. It's called a Patch Popper and uses 2" round patches (arsenal patches or cotton flannel).
I believe he just got his patent for it.

Re: Improvised Range Solutions
BTW, the double barrel version is for both wet and dry patches, sometimes an important thing for BPTR shooters. I have a single barrel version for use with just dry patches for BPCR.

I'm puzzled as to the need for a "solution" to carrying 22 LR cartridges; what's wrong with the original box?

An empty dip can full on .22's works well for woods bum'n.
Slow is just slow.

Re: Improvised Range Solutions
Aside from not being waterproof, nothing really. I just tend to dump them in a more secure, reusable container as opposed to trying to keep the old cardboard one intact if i don't use them all.Merle wrote:I'm puzzled as to the need for a "solution" to carrying 22 LR cartridges; what's wrong with the original box?
The speed loaders are an awesome idea, glomming or no

Maybe that's why I don't see a problem - most of my ammo comes in plastic boxes.....

Re: Improvised Range Solutions
Pellet gun ammo tins work well too, but in a pinch, I just use a pocket.
Re: Improvised Range Solutions
I have the old med bottle filled up, and handy to get ahold of...
(I usually shoot single shots at a time....conserves ammo, let's the bbl cool off a bit, and "supposedly" helps me concentrate on accuracy.)

Howdy,
Old aluminum arrows work well, too..! I cap them with 5/16 rubber vacuum caps from an auto store.
Lots of ideas...

I admit to low tech holders, factory box, pocket, and fingers. Never left any at home.
I'm considering a muzzleloaders ball bag though.

Re: Improvised Range Solutions
Those plastic boxes are noisy and bulky. For 30 years I've carried .22 ammo in a 35mm film canister. Full, they don't rattle at all. After you've used a few it rattles some, but is more muted than on the hard plastic of a CCI-type boxMerle wrote:Panzercat wrote:Aside from not being waterproof, nothing really. I found a link on another site and noted that they're using what looks to be brass brushes... are yours just filled with lint, or did you replace them with cotton swabs?BrentD wrote:they are made by Paul Huard, a really nice guy in California that shoots CLA, BPCR, and BPTR.
