Peterson Pawpaws could use a couple of bucks

Post by Tycer »

The pawpaw was nearly wiped out when we clearcut its habitat. Neil Peterson has been leading the way for its comeback. He has a kickstarter going.

Please pass it on.

We grow them here. They seem to be "exploding" all over the place. All the orchard/tree catalogs have them now.

Thousands of them within a few hundred yards of my house, throughout the woods, but I'll have to admit, the fruit is 'endangered', probably raccoons I'm guessing, but don't really know what eats 'em but me, when I can.

Never heard of them? They are the largest, native, North American fruit.

Grew up in SoCal... a little out of the area they're found.

There is a disclaimer that the project will only be funded if $20,000 is raised. Does that mean if he only raises $15K he plans to pocket it and is not obligated to spend it as the gifter intended?

Maybe I need to start a fund that will revive historical firearms!

The donation is not debited until the entire amount is met. If a kickstarter project does not get fully funded no money exchanges hands.

Brings back old memories wandering the woods of Indiana as my grand father taught me how to shoot. Looks like a pear that has been genetically altered by atomic radiation but tastes like a banana. Without trappers and hunters to keep the varmints down (coons, possums, etc.) it would be hard to find a ripe one that hadn't already been chewed on. Wasn't that easy even back then.

Thanks for posting this Tycer. it's just got Me dumbfounded that I've spent most of My 61 years in the woods hunting, fishing, or cutting wood and never run across even one tree that I can rember. now I just have to try to plant some.

It's real easy to put a bit of stove pipe or metal flashing on a few choice trees that are heavy with green fruit. That will keep some of the riff-raff out, but everyone wants to eat. Deer love them too. They taste like mango-banana and smell like heaven. Don't pick before they are ready (slightly soft and very aromatic). They won't green up on your kitchen counter.
