Question for Reloaders of .348 & .45-70

Post by Griff »

Can you tell me if the shellholders are the same... or very similar? IOWs, can you use the #14 for .348 Winchester as well as .45-70

My .45 Basic brass is the basis of .45-70 AND my .40-90SBN as well as numerous other BP cartridges of the era... which uses a #14 RCBS style shellholder. I have a couple of #14s, including one by Pacific, my 45 Basic brass fits it just dandy, but... the Bertram is a no-go, but fits the RCBS #14 just fine!

Buffalo Arms lists "their" brass and Bertram brass for the .40-90SBN as using shellholder #5. Which if I look it up, is listed for the .348 Winchester. I certainly don't mind buying another shell holder or 3, but... if I was to buy a #5... I'm afraid it might lead to the "need" for a mdl 71!!!!!

I dont recall, and my reloading stuff is buried.

The body of a 348 is larger, its based on the 50-110 Winchester cartridge. Rims are close, I dont recall how much difference.

There are worse things that could happen to you than buying a 71. They make great grouse guns.

Yes, the base of the .348 is much bigger than the .45-70 family. I even had to buy a different hand priming tool since the 348 case would not fit in my old-style auto prime. I use the RCBS universal hand primer for the 348 and all my large primer cases now.

Even though the rims are close the body diameter immediately in front of the rim is much larger on the 348.
With W-W brass:
Both have a rim diameter of .602"
45-70= .500" immediately in front of the rim.
348= .544" immediately in front of the rim.

P.S.
I'm using RCBS shellholders and they don't interchange.

348, 45-70 AND 40-90BN, now we're talking. More than anything it depends on who makes the shell holders. The Lee holders are a little more sloppy and the 45-70 will work for the others but the 348 has no slack to spare. I use 45-2.6 for forming the 40-90SBN so there is no difference from the 45-70. But go ahead and get the #5, then you will be set for the 348  I hope Bertram finally got their Pelosi together cause every one of the 20 that a friend bought me split down the side.

How does your 40-90 cases seat as to head space? My Shiloh has a very tight head space and it is a bear with unaltered cases (prefers thinned rims).

My Shiloh is very tight also. But usually, both the Bertram & Basic brass is just fine and drops right in after the first firing. No room for high primer for sure!

Consider yourself lucky. I thinned 100 cases and use pistol primers but it's still a pain. Should have bought a reamer to open them (have a 45-70 hat does the same thing) up some but I'm good for now.

I use the lee shellholder #8, and it fits the 348 and 45-70. Also supposedly the 33 win and the 40-82.

Griff,

Short of time so I sent you a spreadsheet with the sheelholders for Lee, Hornady, Lyman and RCBS.

None of them match up with the same shellholder for the two calibers mentioned. Ammoguide Interactive Visual Comparison verifies that the bases are different enough to cause a problem, as covered above. Look for your e-mail.

I'm loading for both, and definitely don't use the same shellholder.
#5 for the .348, #14 for the 45/70.

OK, appointments completed, created a PDF file that is readable on any platform from my spreadsheet - Lee, RCBS, Lyman, Hornady shellholders - available at this link:

There may be some new calibers missing; I compiled this a while ago. But it is pretty complete.
