This is something that has irritated me since the first day I learned about the human 9 mo gestation period.

Gabriel came to Mary "in the sixth month", which, by the old Roman calendar, was August (Sextilis) and by the Jewish Calendar was Elul (Aug/Sep) - the last month of Summer.

The Nativity was in April or May.

The Season "is the Reason". (Had to get rid of/co-opt those mid-winter Pagan Holidaze donchaknow...)

If any Biblical Personage was born around the Winter Solstice/Dec 25 it would have been John (Gabriel tells Mary that Elizabeth is already "in her sixth month" (meaning conception in Nisan: Mar/Apr)... So, August/September + 3 months is November/December)

It is possible that the arrival of the Oriental Astrologers "Wise Men"/"Kings" & the Giving of Gifts happened on or around midwinter 2 AD ("at the HOUSE"... not the stable & using the Nativity as 1 AD, though it was really more like anywhere between 6-4 BCE since Herod died in 2 BCE and would have had to make his decree to kill the babies of Bethlehem before he died. but that's harder to calculate from the Text.)

So, rather than even try for a Biblically Correct celebration of an event that is really only a footnote in comparison to the Passion (which is easily placed in time), the Church had to co-opt everybody else's Party - especially the 2nd & 3rd Century "Mithrasmas" celebrations held primarily by the Legions. Talk about a cynical, political ploy. ("You're not celebrating the birth of Mithras on Dec 25, you are really celebrating the Birth of Christ!... who was born in April... Yeah, that's the ticket...)

It's Solstice. Have a party. Just recognize that the importance/reality of the Nativity has NOTHING WHATSOEVER to do with the "Season".
