Thursday 26 NOV 1942
On 26 November 1942, Thanksgiving Day, Marines were battling the Japanese on Guadalcanal. The diary of one veteran noted, “Thanksgiving…air raid siren at 3:30 A.M….very little sleep.”
A history of the 1st Battalion, 11th Marines noted:
“Thursday, November 26, 1942 … a complete Thanksgiving day dinner was served to all hands on Guadalcanal. R4Ds loaded with all kinds of holiday food were flown into Henderson Field and distributed immediately to all units. Batteries of the 1st Battalion, 11th Marines, built ovens and roasted turkeys in them. Every Marine got a cold bottle of Pepsi Cola.”
Thanksgiving Cake, Guadalcanal, 1942
"Thanksgiving Cake --- Lt. Colonel W.W. Stickney, the commanding officer, cuts a Thanksgiving cake with a Japanese officer's sword at Guadalcanal, as hungry Leathernecks look on."

Yep, good story! And using a Japanese sword to cut the cake just adds to it!

Yes, God bless all of 'em who fought and who fell in battle.

Makes me wonder if somewhere in that crowd is John Basilone. As I understand it, not too long after the photo was taken he got word he would receive the Medal Of Honor.

Greetings
Thanks for posting this ! That photo has to be of the headquarters section unless those Marines just went through a shower point and received clean utilities.
Thank God they each stuck out those 6 months . The Japs called Guadelcanal "Starvation Island" which was only a hair better for our Marines.
In the center of the photo is an uncovered young Marine who has all the look of one who has seen enough for a liftime.

The most important aspect of this signature line is that you don't realize it doesn't say anything significant until you are just about done reading it & then it is too late to stop reading it....

Great story for a real hero. Hard men at hard times and a very strange looking cake.new pig hunter wrote:Makes me wonder if somewhere in that crowd is John Basilone. As I understand it, not too long after the photo was taken he got word he would receive the Medal Of Honor.
