got my venison for the year

Post by iceman »

I was out sneaking around my friend's farm this morning to see if anything was around. I had been hunting his place almost all week. I missed one last Sunday and haven't seen anything since. I was very frosty this morning and the ground was frozen hard making walking sort of crunchy. I did my normal walk around and saw nothing. Decided it was time to call it quits and head home.
Just as I came around the end of his machine shed I saw a doe on the bush edge of his hay field at about 150 yards and walking slowly across the field. I crouched down and made over to his wood pile to be better hidden from view. As I stuck my head up I notice 2 more coming out of the bush and following the first one. I sighted on the larger of the 3 and waited for a decent shot. She turned broadside to me at around 125 yards and looked like she thought something was wrong so I aimed a couple of inches below her back, in line with her front leg and fired. She dropped right there. My 50 cal Thompson Center Impact got its first deer. I was using a 300 grain, 45 cal Hornady SST in a sabot and 90 grains of 777. The bullet hit right where I was aiming, She should be good eating as there are corn and soy bean fields all around the area.

Decent doe. They provide the best venison in my opinion, even if bucks have more meat. I'll take either.

Dropped her off at the butcher today. Field dressed weight on his scales 133 lbs. Not a bad size for a doe.

Congratulations! That's a good sized deer. I wish DFW would get some doe hunts going in California. You can't eat them horns anyway!
