English Setter Name

Post by Hawkeye2 »

Life without our field breed English Setter Lancer was pretty dull and we had planned on getting another dog after the first of the year. My wife and I discussed other breeds but she convinced me we had to get another Setter so I began a search online. Well I found a breeder that had a litter but by the time we were able to get there because of having to work on the weekend he had only one male left. That simplified the choice and my wife was satisfied with the remaining one. He was the least colorful but the breeder had told me several days prior when he still had 4 males that this one seemed to be the leader of the pack. Well after over 8 hours on the road $50+ in gas and $18 worth of fast food we arrived home with our (and our Airedale's) new companion. At 9 weeks old he learned in less than a day that he is supposed to go outdoors (most of the time), to wear a collar and walk reasonably well on a leash and to sit when bribed to. He seems to be very affectionate and should make a great therapy dog.The biggest hurdle we face is finding a name for him, any suggestions?

Where'd you get him ?

Last setter pup I got took me 13 hours from central VA , she was in Blanchard MI area .

Well if I were of the inclination to get another setter to actually grouse hunt , I'd name it after whatever my preferred grouse gun was . Most likely Parker , but perhaps Fox or Smith !

The west side of Blacksburg. I live so far up in VA I have WV on 3 sides of me and only 2 miles away at the closest, so it was quite a drive. I consider myself very lucky to have found him as close as I did and the price was real good too. The breeder raises and sells Quail too. Good suggestion, I have 2 Parkers and that sounds better than Mossberg. A friend of my wife suggested Winchester.

"Parker" sounds like a good name for a hunting breed to me, but I named a Cattle Dog breed puppy "Balto"---after the famous sled dog. My wife named a coal black Jack Russell "Sparkle Diamond" and it seems to be right. I had to stop the fight and we named our ChihuaWeenie "Chocolate Brownie Mix" since my Wife wanted "Brownie" and my Daughter wanted "Chocolate". Just don't name him "Stay" or "Sex" or you will have a lot of trouble.

Well it came down to two names, Parker and Mosby. My wife and I agreed (!!) on Mosby and she threw it out on Facebook and got 6 unanimous votes for Mosby too. Parker was a great name an a big thank you to those who offered suggestions.

Mosby, ready to ride:

Mosby is a good name, too. There is nothing wrong with giving a dog a name to live up to. If I ever move someplace cooler---so that it wouldn't be a hardship on the dog, I want to get a Norwegian Elkhound and name it Simo after the famous Finnish sniper. Texas would necessitate a lot of shaving the dog's fur way down and a pool or something for the heat.

If it is your dog, you get to name it. Although, I see names for kids nowadays and have to wonder whatever happened to timple names. If it is not my kid, or dog, then I don't get to name it. I may like some of the names you have named your dogs, but I don't have the right to change them whether I want to or not.
