Looking for load data 357 with 180 gr cast bullet

Post by bluesman423 »

I have done a LOT of searching but have not found very much load data for this cartridge.

357 mag with 180gr cast bullet with a gas check. The cartridge will be used exclusively in a Marlin 1894c with a microgroove 18.5 in barrel.

Powder is getting hard to find so if possible I would like reload data using 2400, H110 or Unique since I already have those powders.

Published data, internet links or sources and your own personal loading data would be nice if you can help.

Thanks!

A couple of three that has your powder, I load 12.5 gr of 2400 for a 180 in a pistol and I also use Lil'gun the book calls for 15 grs under a 180 I load alittle bit more. Lil'gun will push a lead bullet faster with less pressure than H110. danny

In lieu of better information, I will say that 15-16 gr of 2400 with that bullet should be quite reasonable in that case. It works very well in the .38-40 with a cast bullet of the same weight and no gas check, albeit a bit larger diameter.

But I'm sure better information will come along shortly.

These are the ranges I've used for those powders. Highest velocity was not my most accurate with either of these powders.
12-14 gr 2400
13.5-14.5 H110
Kind regards,
Tycer

Thanks for the help guys!

As for Lil Gun ..... it just ain't gonna happen right now .................... I can't find it anywhere, not even at the Tulsa gun show last weekend. In fact, most powders are hard to find right now, or at least the ones I like.

IF you can ever find some LilGun, that is THE powder for those heavy cast bullets in a 357. I use 15.0 gr. in mine, and they are very, very accurate. Pushes that 180 gr. cast bullet 1350 fps from my Blackhawk.

I know what you're saying. It's been a looooong time since there was any powder on the shelves around here. I do think it's getting better though. When I picked up the 444 from my local FFL last week, they actually had about 6 powders on the shelf, including some common ones that I haven't seen for a couple years, like Unique. So I do think it's starting to improve, however slowly.

Lyman cast bullet manual lists 11.1gr of 2400, and 12.7gr of H110, behind a 180gr cast.
I haven't used H110 but I went well over 11.1 of 2400 with no problems using a gas check punched from a beer can designed to fit a plain base bullet. (ymmv)
I now use a 175gr bullet with ADI 2205 (4227) and get 1750fps out of a 20" barrel.
