Went to the gun show today at Guernsey, took a couple rifles just in case a good trade come up and one did. After the trading was done, I ended up with a new never fired OLD New Frontier Colt in 44-40!
took a few shots with it and I am pleased. Here are some pictures.
Used the wifes empty wine box for a target... not bad for a never fired.... had to adjust the sights twice and then it was right in there!
Good show for a little town.. lots of guns.. and people! High priced 22 shells yet.. whoo
Bought a bunch of led bullets, 5 bucks a hundred.. yes really.. loaded in the 44-40

There bout 430 but they wont chamber so I took the decapping stem out & ran them back in the seizer die a bit to make them fit, seems to work but im gonna have to order a 427 seizing die
the way it looks to me, im a afraid to do any thing different though because of the way it shot
these bullets are 240 gr. with a gas check

Hot digity dog! And on my birthday too. Ole' Ologger comes home with a REAL single action and.......in a very cool caliber. New Frontier 44-40's are rare......you done well
Now you need to hunt down a 44 Spl. cylinder and a set of ivories for completion of the finest revolver in the state of Wyoming.
I have a NF in 44-40 and 44Spl. And I fitted both with an extra 44 Spl and 44-40 cylinders. Easy to do and easily available.
Now..........did Boots give it a workout yet?
I feed mine .429 bullets, both 200 and 250 grain. 6 gr. of Bullseye for play and 7.5 of Unique for harder play.------6

sounds like you went farther on your six guns than im willing to go but sounds nice
is 429 bout right on most of the NF colts? nope Boots hasn't shot it yet maybe Sunday

I'm 99.99% sure that Colt uses the same barrel stock for 44 Spl. And 44-40. 44Spl cylinders are most likely available from Brownells and 9 times out of ten they pop right in. At most you may have to file a bit off the cylinder boss or whatever it's called.
Like I said all four cylinders get fed .429 inch bullets with acceptable accuracy.
Although I'm a fan of both calibers, the 44 Spl. handles the heavier bullets much easier. When shooting the 250's out of the 44-40, sometimes, depending on the bullet you are using, you have to play with the seating depth as crimp grooves don't line up correctly for overall length.
Although Rugers are the best "meat and potatoes" guns, as JT says, "nothing stirs the soul like a Colt"-----6
M M have the Win brass but will try to get some starline
maybe I should pull a bullet I sized in the cartridge & measure it
Six believe me I made every adjustment I could think of, bullet needs to shrink
theirs no doubt you have a very nice pair of Six Guns & the xtra cyl. would make it
a bit more versatile, and the Ivory grips would increase the drool factor!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I hear ya. As I'm sure you know, stay with the largest diameter possible that will still chamber. Colt barrels I have slugged come out at .428 with the throats a bit more.----6
a well used 92 Winchester in 25-20 that would not shoot cast bullets

i love those new frontiers, i have a couple of them with cylinders for 44/40 and 44 special.....and having the adjustable sights you can shoot both to point of aim.
sounds like im getting talked into a 44 spl. cyl.
after I cussed the Lyman seating die 89 times today im thinking its to tight
part way up on seating it starts shaving lead bad, nothing I tried has worked & it wont crimp
I tried my 38-40 Lee crimp die & it put a cute roll crimp over the forward band
and now it chambers easily, I was in a hurry Saturday & blamed the bullet, but today
I think I got it figured out

Why is that? I know pretty close to nothing about handguns, but what does a .44 spl have that a .45 colt, .44-40 or even a .38-40 lack?
Just a nice mild , easy shooting cartridge akin to the 45 Colt ----- but easy to deal with can refer to its ease of reloading compared to the semi bottleneck 44/40 or 38/40
